Hey fella's, We just swapped out my brothers blown 1zz engine out for a junk yard engine with 30k miles or so on it.
finally got it wrapped up and running tonight. still on the jack stands and still haven't had it out for a road test yet but anywho, got the engine running. once it had fuel she fired right up.
idles fine, revs up fine, burped the engine fine, engine fan came on when needed to. but i noticed when she warmed up i'd grab the throttle wheel and if you gave it a quick jerk(tug) to bring the rpms up you would hear a "knock" as you would say just for a split second. and it would only knock just once before it revs up. kinda like something slapped the valve cover. almost seems like a timing chain slap to me. but i wouldn't think so for it being such a fresh engine from junk yard.
and if you just ease into it like normal operation its silent. idles nice. sounds good.
is there something that i'm missing? i swapped out the sensor from under the intake manifold over to the one that came off the old engine. along with the coolant rail that was flowing underneath it. as the other one didn't have a "T" right where she bolts up at the front.

Did you forget a motor mount and the entire engine is slaping around?

:-/ I've heard engines that knocked for a second only on engine acceleration...at first. Most ended up knocking on a more regular basis later and eventually puked.

lol god i hope not. but no. everything is tightened down. it sounds like its smack dab under the valve cover. i cant imagine it needing a valve adjustment.
i was thinking that maybe the vvti gear could cause some of this?
never threw any check engine lights either. when i noticed that it started to idle around 5-600rpms

but its just a slight tap. like someone took a little hammer and gave it a quick tap. only once then its fine. and thats only if you give it a quick jolt.
not a consistent "knock/tap"

chain tensioner could be bad

yea, that's how it started on one engine...ended up spinning a bearing. my advice is to run the **** out of it now so that either it takes a dump before the junkyard warranty expires or to drop the pan and pull the rod caps/main caps to check things out for signs of oil starvation in the past.

i really don't think its the bottom end. i'll get videos up as soon as they get done loading up from my droid. took it to gas station tonight and it ran beautiful. smooth, and healthy. other then that little tick. but normal operation it doesn't happen.
then i found out i couldn't fill it up with fuel something is bugged up with the fill tube. theres not flapper deal and it wouldn't let me fill it up. had to pull the pump out to put fresh clean fuel inside. so i need to figure out that issue too.
and i popped the hood on my celica and listened to see if it would do it or not but no dice. mine does not do this. and it only happens when its 1200 rpms or lower.
but i'll have videos coming as they upload.
step dad may take it down to the local 1zz-2zz toyota tech to have him listen to it.
you guys think the vvt-i sprocket could be an issue. it sounds like upper valve cover, timing chain side. right where the sprocket is.

thats an odd sound, not anything like what I was talking about. got me stumped, I could guess timing chain/valve train issue but it would just be pure guess.

lol exactly! something thats new to me. my step dad replaced the exhaust manifold since the one that came with the engine wasn't correct with the angle and all so tomorrow i'll get in there and see if he left any bolts loose. but its not a clatter just a tap. so i'll look over everything again.
its just got me stumped too.
