Here are some pics of the tyc tails I received in the group buy fr. TwinCelicaGirl. Also, I finally got around to painting my engine plastics. I'm liking the color - looks good in person IMO. I think I like the TYC's too (not completely sure). Could someone who has done it please tell me what part of the passenger tail you heve to file for it to fit flush? I'm having trouble finding the spot. Thx

just curious... when the engine plastics are painted say with a high temp paint, is it ok to have on every day? or do u need to take them off, and only put on for show? thnx:)

You can leave them on, there is no need to take them off. I painted mine about 6 weeks ago and have had no problems whatsoever with them. ;)

When u close ur trunk does the silver part shows on the tail. Cuz when we test fit it. and close the trunk the silver part of the light shows. Does this happen to you.

Thanks for all of the compliments guys - I appreciate it :)

RacingCelica: Are you referring to the silver part (black on stock tail) that rests behind the verticle part of the hatch (w/ license plate)? If so, yes it is visible a little because there is about 1/8 inch gap between pretty much all separate body parts of the car and it shows thru - but it doesn't look bad or anything IMO.

If anyone else is looking for these tails - TwinCelicaGirl is your best bet. I ordered mine at a great price and they got here in less than a week!

Also, anyone out there know exactly where to file that passenger tail to make it fit? It's no big deal but I just want to be sure so I don't screw it up.

What kind of paint did you use on the engine plastics and what color.... it looks great and I would love to paint mine like that.

I used Dupli-Color Flexible Bumper Primer for the base so that it would withstand some heat and flex. Then I used Dupli-Color Auto Color in I believe it's Garnet Red (they make pretty much any color imaginable). Neither were really Hi Temp Paint - but I think w/ the primer it should hold up fine.

Cicero...did you have to sand your plastics? What preparation did you do before you started spraying?

I have a question, how did you keep the VVTL-i on the engine plastsics when you painted the top engine cover? I painted everything under my hood execpt those plastics because I don't know what to do with the VVTL-i sign.

Thanks in advance

put masking(sp?) tape on them before you start spraying

You'd have to do some pretty precise paint masking to leave the Toyota Symbol and VVTL-i perfect. I'm gonna try this liquid mask stuff that they have for R/C cars. You paint it on, and let it dry, and it becomes liek rubber, and then you paint everything and peel off the rubber.

I cleaned and sanded w/ 1000 grit sand paper and then cleaned again w/ Isopropyl Alcohol b4 starting.

The best way to mask the letters is most likely to take the time to cut masking tape to fit. However, I didn't do this. Instead, without much thinking, I covered the letters in vasoline and when the paint dried everywhere, I scraped it off the letters. My theory was that the paint would not dry on the vasoline. (stupid) Of course, the paint did dry over the vasoline as well so there was a good connection with it and the surrounding paint - that was bad. So, all I could do is carefully scrape the paint off the vvtl-i (it did come off a lot easier over the vasoline) and try not to take the other paint w/ it. In 1 or 2 places it did, so I repainted those spots so it wouldn't peel in the future and you can't even see it. I would definitely recommend the masking tape method LOL

Calsoldire posted right b4 me :) Yeah, if there is some kind of liquid rubber stuff you could brush on and it will protect, it seems like that would work best - just don't use vasoline..hehe

masking tape over the whole thing, then come back with small scissors and an exacto knife. Just trace the edges :D

You could just not worry about masking any of it off and just go over it again with a paint pen.
