Nice, but seems a bit underpowered even given the light curb weight...

How is 150-200hp underpowered when its main competition only has 160hp?
(speculating this is going to be a MX-5/Solstice/Sky contender)

the Miata is 2500-2600 lbs, 170 hp
the Solstice is 2700-2800 lbs, 170 hp
so 2200 lbs and 150-200 hp is spot on.
If they can actually make it 2200 lbs.
And not hideously ugly.

I really hope they don't screw up on the styling of the coupe. That thing sounds promising. 1000 kilos is a stretch for bimmer, let's hope they'll be somewhat close.

I too think 1000 kilos is going to be a stretch, specially considering the reinforcements they may need if this is going to be a roadster, either that or it's gonna be ridiculously cramped like the Elise.

And it will end up easily being a 40K BMW. sigh.

FULL STORY (http://www.motorauthority.com/preview-bmw-z2-roadster.html)
That speculation would lead us to believe that a range of four-cylinders, including a 120hp (90kW) entry-level model and a 211hp (157kW) turbocharged unit could be on the table for the smallest of BMW's roadsters. A target price of about €25,000 - at least €5,000 cheaper than the existing Z4 - would put it at the more affordable end of the spectrum, but still far from inexpensive. The soft-top Roadster would be fairly light, however, and the thrifty four-cylinder engines would be efficient. This combination would make it an ideal competitor for cars like the Mazda MX-5 and Lotus Elise.
Whether the car is eventually built or not, it won't likely see sales in the U.S. in the near term, as even the 1-series Coupes on offer here are only available with the inline-six in naturally aspirated and twin-turbo form. Four-cylinder engines with turbochargers and direct injection could eventually see U.S. sale, but the first applications for them will likely be conservative 3-series sedans, not sports cars.

Rendering: BMW Z2 comes back to focus (http://www.bmwblog.com/2011/01/21/rendering-bmw-z2-comes-back-to-focus/)
The BMW Z2 Roadster will launch in the second half of 2012 and a Coupe variant will follow as well. BMW Z2 is based on next generation 1 Series platform and it is build under the Project i umbrella and the BMW’s EfficientDynamics program.
The latest rendering from Carmagazine UK shows a stylish Z2 Roadster with the upside-down kidney grille rumored to appear on future BMWs. As we advanced well into the year, we expect to learn more about the production details of the new Z2.
The Z2 will be a rear-drive vehicle and will feature different powertrains. The options considered are an all-electric engine, a hybrid with range extender petrol engine and a new 1.6 liter turbocharged engine developing near 200 horsepower.

the problem with this is that these cars will be slow as balls, yet people will think because they're in a BMW they're fast, and drive like *******s.
Just like current 318i drivers do.

Update!
BMW May Launch 13 Front-Drive Cars Within 5 Years (http://blogs.insideline.com/straightline/2011/01/bmw-may-launch-13-front-drive-cars-within-5-years.html)
Come 2016, CAR says BMW will launch a car code-named FAST, a sort of Mercedes B-Class vehicle that we'd wager doesn't have much of a chance for American importation. On the other hand, the BMW Z2 sounds like a car that could land here in 2016, a small Miata-sized roadster with power kept up front like the 90s-era Lotus Elan. Given how expensive the Z4 has become and how successful the cheaper Z3 was, the approximately $32,000 Z2 could work despite where its power comes from.

Oh cool, a heavy, expensive miata.
Toss a real hard top on it and make an M model and keep it under 40k and it would be interesting.

Actually I retract my previous statement. It wouldn't be interesting, it would be a 370z. Which wouldn't be bad..
the Lotus Elan was ****ing insanely awesome.
