Why does the S2000 have a dual exhaust? Doesn't that hurt performance by screwing around with the exhaust flow? And what's the little pipe coming out of the end nearest the cat for?

Because it looks cool :)

and it doesn't hurt anything, but a single 3" exhaust would probablyhav eteh same effect.

The short, plugged, stub, before the cat, is there to tune the resonant frequency of the exhaust. The magnitude of the exhaust pulse will be maximized at a specific frequency, rpm, because of that stub.

It is used, as a component, which selects the shape of the power curve.

The dual exhaust will actually INcrease performance due to less backpressure. If you used too large of a cross sectional diam you would have pkg. It also has an active muffler like BMW 3 Series cars have. It breathes thru only one at lower speed [perhaps load is used, too, I dunno] for noise and uses both for high rpm running for less backpressure.

The S2000 does not use an active muffler system. It simply has the Mugen style dual pass system (on the backside of the muffler a tube comes out and re-enters).

The dual system really does nothing for performance. Good single exhaust systems have been shown to pick up power and save mucho weight. However, to keep things quiet, a dual offers more muffler volume without the packaging issues of a big single muffler, as Chui mentioned.

You have to remember, the stock S2000 exhaust is about 2.5" after the cat, but when it splits to dual it goes down to under 2" for each pipe. The overall pipe cross sectional areas end up being about the same, but you have the added restriction of the Y-pipe to deal with, plus more surface area in the dual pipe.
