View Full Version : AEM wideband gauge

When I bought my car the previous owner included an AEM wideband gauge, I have pretty much been using it to look at the numbers mindlessly not knowing at all what they mean. I've tried to learn about them but with no real luck, so pretty much I'm looking for a breakdown of what these numbers mean. My numbers will range wildly from 13-15 but mostly stay around 14.6 is this normal? I have heard of the terms lean and rich and it can be bad to go too far either way. My car is 6-speed GTS, N/A stock ECU just basic mods I/E and random other minor things. So any basic explanation would be great.

Wideband measures your exhaust gases. Tells you if you're running too lean or too rich. widebands are usually used with turbo cars.

The numbers show the air/fuel ratio. The numbers you are seeing are normal for a stock ECU. When you go WOT at high rpm they should drop into the 12-11 range meaning running rich, as the ECU sends a lot of fuel by default. Here's graph on a stock ECU:

Thanks for the graph and explanation so just to check when idle I get 14.6-14.9 while driving it's all over the place no consistency at all doesn't stay on the same number at all is this normal? And like you said in lift it's at 12ish. I'm just checking all this to maybe explain bad mpg I'm getting.

It's suppose to bounce everywhere when on the throttle. just not insanely. Ideal is for it to stay Stoch. which is mid way between lean and rich. It will move around because the engine is always compensating fuel flow for air flow.Especially with our VVTI

As long as the variation doesn't go out of range (about 17 max and 10 min) you'll be fine. Remember that the graph I gave is a dyno pull so the car is at WOT and thus in open loop. During normal driving the ECU runs mostly in closed loop so it's constantly adjusting AFRs based on what the sensors send as information. Try cleaning the MAF sensor and see if that helps.

Ok great thanks for info I did clean my maf I think I'm gonna change u2 sensors soon

Pretty sure our 02's are heated and wideband.

as far as i know theres no toyota that comes with a factory
