View Full Version : 1ZZ rods
I am doing my homework regarding how much boost I can run on a stock 1zz engine. I read that everything is fine till 250whp but the rods. I tried finding out what s the limit of them without finding the answer.
I am planning to install the C30-94 rotrex, and I am wondering how much hp I can safely run (daily driving, not for track use).
My primary aim is 230bhp (~205whp). Is this doable for my current ~100000mile 1zz fully healthy stock engine (stock rods)? The car is from the year 2000, I own it the past 3 years treating it like a princess, never led me down, never lost a single oil drop.

dont pass 250 whp whatever you do
205 whp shouldnt be any problem
and because you have an 2000 GT i would say dont ad a supercharger to it

ok then im missing your point,why not a supercharger?compared to a turbo on a inline 4 ?

because turbos make more power and with a fatter powerband...on small motors (big motors too, but big motors can get away with a blower quicker than a smaller one will)

why not do a mild build on your GT and get the **** out of it?
If you decided to SC your car with a Rotrex you'll anyway spend muchos of cash... so it doesn't matter investing 2-3k more... also it's much better doing a little rebuild of your engine with 100k of miles on it. -Better than blowing it up and investing still much more for a whole build...
Personally I'd just get the turbokits.com turbokit, much less hassle...

If 205whp is fine, i LL go for it then.

is this because it's a GT or prefacelift?
Oil starvation is not a matter to me. I do regular check ups, and if time ever comes that I ll have this problem, it will be the perfect timing for a full engine rebuilt and aim for higher hps

My GT is a RHD, thus I cannot use any ready made turbo kits.
Regarding the rebuilt...... i will not be able to run it as a daily driving car in case i do a (full) rebuilt, as I ll look for more power and it wont be cost effective by any means :gap:

It is not boring when you upgrade from 140 to 230bhp, but when it ll get boring, I ll simply shed another few bucks for building the engine and do a simple retune ;)

i just got a turbo on my GT, 3 months ago.. 220bhp and the shop claimed it's the safe margin for a stock 1zz... they turbo'ed many 1zz in the past and they still run fine so i believe them.
i must add that i had a 2000 1zz engine which had oil consumption problems in the past, it was fixed but i did not want to risk it, so i swapped a 2005 1zz with very low mileage, wasn't really expensive hence the turbo cost so i would say it's a good idea to do it.
and you can really feel a big difference, i know it's still new to me and i'll get use to it eventually but i still claim it's really worth the buck.

Thanks for your reply and especially for the bold part.
I know that it is better to have a facelift, low mileage GT engine, and even better, a healthy GTS one. Unfortunately in the little island that i live, gen7s are rare, and even rearer are the facelift ones. For an engine transplant the cost is ridiculously high, i.e a friend of mine that blown his gts engine last year, paid 5000euros (~7000usd) for a transplant. Having this in mind I ll go with what I have for the time being

there are people who run their pre lift 1zz without any oil consumption problems so maybe some engines were'nt affected. if yours runs fine then i would say go for it, but keep in mind that you may need to rebuild it eventually.
i got my engine from UK and the cost was around 1000usd when converted. as for the turbo kit + mount + tune 5000usd. hope you got a good shop there to do it ;)
