I think everyone should complain to toyota because the clutches are going bad. some of them at like 5k to 30k. mine just went bad and they are telling me I have to pay to have it fixed. Even though it only has 27k. At first I just thought that it was only mine and maybe I had done something to it. But after some research. (look in repairs forum) and talking to other people. the clutches are going bad. It is wrong and toyota won't do jack about it. It makes me mad cause now I gotta fork out 800 to get a new one. COMPLAIN! I am.....

Wear item. toyota wont cover it because its SUPPOSED to wear out. It also depends on how much you ride the clucth or slip it on how fast it will go out.

Not uncommon for a clutch to go out at your mileage if you drive it hard. Toyota shouldn't cover it, and wont. My friend got Toyota to cover his that went out at 20k, but thats cause he did ALOT of bitching. He even agrees it was his fault. Ohwell..

dude, that would be like saying, "gimme brake pads under warranty because they worn out" like said, its supposed to do that....

yes clutches are SUPPOSED to wear out. but I've been told by someone who works at toyota that the factory clutch they put in wasn't strong enough to handle the high preformance engine. which is why they are going bad. I don't drive my car hard. auto-crossed it a couple time but that shouldn kill the clutch. It shouldn't need a new clutch yet. toyota should take responsiblity for it.

some people who work for toyota dont know their ass from a hole in the wall, people at the dealership still say that my car has the TRD body kit, when I have the RMM, I got tired of correcting them...

I guess I am an exception to the rule then.
Let me tell you a story of what happened to my clutch. I took it into the dealership to get an oil change. The Re-re that took my car must not have been able to drive stick b/c he stalled out like 3 times driving the car about 30 feet. Trying to get the car on the lift seemed especially difficult for him as he couldn't get it half way up the damn ramp. So, he thinks that flooring the gas and letting the clutch only half way out will get him up. All he manages to do is makes BIG WHITE CLOUDS of smoke come out my hoodscoop. I was completely in shock. I didn't recover until I was on my way home. Good thing too, or that b!tch would have been dead. That was about 60k miles ago. I have 79k miles on now. Stock clutch. No problems.

My stock clutch is at 48,500 miles and counting. THat does include 400+ autocross runs and about 15 1/4 mile passes.
So, I'm not going to call Toyota. I've never seen most of the folks on this board drive, but I have seen people that thought they knew how to drive, but really didn't.
How do I know that the people with clutch failures at 5000 miles really aren't clueless? Because they tell me?
George Bush says he isn't a criminal, do I believe him?

Damn, you let them get away with that? I would've demanded something.
Anyway, another one here with over 30,000 miles and no problem on the stock clutch. And just because a handfull of other people abused there clutch to an early death, doesn't mean it is bad.

well, I don't need to defend my driving. I've been driving a long time and have had a lot of cars. this the FIRST clutch I have ever seen go bad in any car I've owned. all I'm saying is this. It is a warning. just give it time.. it'll go bad... my toyota source is a serious on. dont call me a bad driver. all my orginal posting was for was to bitch about my car that is now broken which I KNOW I didn't abuse. but thats ok... all the rest of the people who think I'm smoking something can think that. but one day. your clutch will go bad and you wonder why it did with so little miles. Clutches should last more then 100k. I'm out.

Start your car, press clutch in, stick it in 5th or 6th gear, drop the clutch hard. If your car doesn't die right away when you drop it your clutch has a good chance or being worn out. If it dies right away, you're all ok. :D
**** MINE WENT OUT AT 5k.... I have a 2000 gts... wait, I blew it from a misshift haha ok next case. I have had my clutch and my car is at 40k from 5k with no problems.....

I purchased my celica beginning of 2000. I am a VERY careful driver. Been told I drive like a granny and my clutch went. Toyota wouldn't do a thing. 13K on there and it's MY fault?? Come on, somethings up. I don't think it's just hard driving, I think Toyota put some crappy clutches in the GTS. I had to fork out almost a grand just because of the stupid 'wear and tear' not covered on my warranty. That is a load of horse crap when I didn't even GET to wear and tear my baby....... Grrrr.....................

Grandmas wear out clutches faster then normal driving in the endless time spent slipping the clutch for smoother shifts.
Also, the only thing you really did wrong was pay 1000+ for a clutch....call around, pay no more then 5 or 6 hundred for a new clutch+ install...

so what is the proper way to engage the clutch?
lets say going from 2 to 3
you depress the clutch, shift into gear, then smoothly let out the clutch while gassing it right? What if you dont let out the clutch fast enough and gas it hard? would that be burning the clutch? Feathering the clutch while in reverse? Would that be hurting the clutch too? sorry for such newbie questions.

i dont feather the clutch the whole time im moving in reverse. i just get it moving, depress the pedal to release the clutch, then let the car roll to wherever.

Clutches wear out at different levels depending on how you drive. Also, it's very easy to tell when a clutch has failed because of wear and because of a problem. Anyone who's worked on clutches before can tell. There are very different signatures for each kind of failure. All this talk about how quickly somone's clutch went out is meaningless if you don't include what exactly failed. The people posting longer clutch lives show there isn't a generic problem. I don't care how long you've been driving a manual transmission. That doesn't mean you're a good driver and not hard on clutches. I've got 236k miles on my MR2's stock clutch. No real problems so far.

You know, when you have members like autxer posting saying that they put over 400 autocross runs and 15 passes at the track on their stock clutch with no problems it kind of throws the whole "weak stock clutch" theory out the window.

Did I mention that I taught my wife to drive a manual transmission on the Celica, and the FIRST weekend we had it, she participated in her first autocross school in the car. If that doesn't kill a car, what will?

I blew my clutch and presure plate at 12K, The dealership tried to say it was abuse. We argued back and forth, I actully called the guy an asshole, the manager came out, they said they just wanted my permission to open the tranny. An hour later I get a call, Actual qoute- "Good news sir, It was a mechanical defect in your pressure plate, And it will be covered by warrenty." Two days later, I go to pick it up, and it had like an inch of grime on it. So I bitched more. My dealership has one of those autowash garages, I got a year free pass. I was there like everyother day washing it for free.
The moral, Squeaky wheel gets the grease.
