Yeah, this might not be celica related, but I had an interesting vacation and have to let off some steam!
Yeah yeah, toyotas might be ranked top of the line in reliability, but that was anything but the case with my 1997 4runner. With 95k miles, no repairs, and up to date maintanence, I excected this puppy to last for at least another 5 more years. Well, I got crap for luck, that's all I have to say. While enjoying a nice vacation down at the beach, and driving to a club for a night of fun:wiggle:, I hear a CRACK GRIND CRUNCH :bang: Well, to make a long story short, one of the cylinders broke and the only option was to replace the engine. That was like 45% of the remaining value of the vehical so I left that pos and drove back in a new Sequola!

Sorry to hear that. My mom has a '99 4runner and hasn't had any problems.

My uncles got a 95 4runner. Only 130k but still runs strong. A very underpowered v6 he says but he's had no major problems.

Well for '03, it's suppose to be available with a V8.

95,000 miles and NO repairs needed. Sunds like good reliability to me.

Lets see - new (used) engine: $600 from junkyard.

Install: $600-1000 depending on the shop, or a case of beer for the friends and $200 for rented tools.

Still sounds like a good deal to me. The biggest problem I see is the towing bill to get the truck home.

1991 V6 SR5 with 194,000 miles--runs like a champ.

Failures can occur in the best of vehicles.

My mom has a 98 4Runner with 65K miles, routine maintenance done by myself and still running like the day she got it. :)

Hankwoo,

I had a '97 4Runner SR5. Did you ever go back to get the head gasket replaced? Mine never caused a leak but they changed it anyway during a routine visit since there were problems there. I never checked for a service bulletin or recall but it was a sporatic problem with 4Runners. Sometimes I miss my 4Runner. It was the best non-car I owned. No maintenance issues and I beat it up in the Poconos on occasion...a plus was the amazing trade-in value for the Celica I drive now.
