Decided to use my Canon 60D w/ my EFS 18-135mm lens for the first time.

Got a few shots and picked this one to be my first edit in Adobe Lightroom.

Thought I'd share to you guys. Hope my skills pick up along the way as I get use to my camera and using Lightroom for edits. Hope you enjoy.... I'll just be posting up pics every now and then.

Nice shots so far.

Welcome to the photography section. I assume you've read the rules. ;)

Good start. I think focus could be adjusted to hone in on the flower head more thus giving it better detail. :)

hey rtz what's your name?
welcome to the photography section :gap:
i like both of them, the horizon seems off on the first one but besides that i like it. the 2nd one you should've stopped down some more so the flower would've been sharper.

My name's Johnny.

And yeah... My horizon is kind of off on the first one. Should've used the leveler on my camera.

2nd picture could be better. And I think it would help if I get myself a macro lens in the future.

Much more room for growth! Thanks for all your advices!

that last one would look really nice if it were a long exposure

RTZCeli
05-31-2011, 02:34 PM
^And I can do that by just changing the shutter speed to say... 1/1000 for example?

What would change in that picture if I used a longer exposure?

I assume I'd get a different effect on the water since that's the only element moving in the picture... right?

Zero
05-31-2011, 02:38 PM
The water will look hazy and you'll have to adjust the exposure since a slow shutter speed during the day will make the image come out bright.

mrluilou
05-31-2011, 02:52 PM
johnny first you have to stop down your camera to like f22 and get the shutter as slow as you can . try taking that same picture around 6pm or when the sun is setting and you'll see how nice the water will turn out.

This would probably require a tripod since any slight movement can make the picture blurry. But I think I know what you mean... I will definitely try this out.

Is this concept the same if I wanted to take a picture of the highway with the effect of getting the lights on the cars to appear like streaks?

mrluilou
05-31-2011, 10:57 PM
yeah you can get the same effect as well :gap:
johnny are you sure that's a 13mm and not an 18mm?

RTZCeli
05-31-2011, 11:00 PM
^I stand corrected. It's a 18mm. If I had a 13mm, I think my macro shots would look better ^_^

Just working w/ what I have for now. Will upgrade my lens in the near future. Any recommendations?

I bought the 60D mainly because of its videography features. Had I wanted to do it for photography, I would've chosen a Nikon D7000 or anything Nikon for that matter...

mrluilou
05-31-2011, 11:25 PM
a 13mm wouldn't have made your lens any better for macro photography. you need a lens that has a macro ratio of 1:1. there are some lenses that are 1:2 which aren't that bad for macro work. what do you plan on shooting in the future?

RTZCeli
05-31-2011, 11:36 PM
^to be honest, most of my shots would probably be landscape. I don't plan on doing a whole lot of macro shots... mostly just scenery shots and every now and then some portraits and of course... the Celica!

i would suggest getting a ultra wide angle lens then :shrugs: i would also recommend getting a wide angle prime lens for portraits.

Tokina UWA!

Every company makes good and bad lenses so it depends on what range/speed you're looking for.

For UWA, Tokina makes the best ones.

Ok, I'll look into a tokino for UWA lenses. Anyone have a recommendation fisheye lens?

I thought they were kinda cool for cinematography.

Meanwhile, I just purchased some more gear for the camera. Got myself a Pearstone lens hood and a Zeikos battery grip. This photography hobby isn't any cheaper than modding the Celica... Lol

...And my first lens purchase:

Canon 28mm f/1.8 USM

http://www.wlcastleman.com/equip/reviews/28mm/28mm.jpg

Pretty sharp at 2.8 and beyond. Did a few portraits over the weekend. Has a pretty nice bokeh. I read reviews from others that this lens had a lot of chromatic aberration issues, but so far I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase.

It's a little weird shooting with a 28mm on a cropped body, but it doesn't bother me so much. Just gotta take a few steps forward closer to my subjects ;)

Show you guys some samples tonight.

And now... I want to get rid of my 18-135mm IS f/3.5 -5.6 lens

mrluilou
07-18-2011, 03:16 PM
that's a pretty good lens for group portraits ! you can usually see CA when you're stopped all the way up

RTZCeli
07-18-2011, 03:25 PM
^I haven't found the right light situation to stop all the way up yet. So far I've been using mostly 2.8-5.6 in my shots over the weekend.

But I'm glad you think it's a pretty good lens!

I had a friend who wanted me to go for the Tamron 18-55 f/2.8 but I really wanted a prime lens for videos so i stuck w/ the Canon. Build quality is better than the Tamron.

How much was it? I'd prefer a 28mm prime as opposed to my 50mm prime. :faint:

RTZCeli
07-20-2011, 10:52 PM
Bought it second hand for $415. Bargained the guy to include a Hoya UV filter :gap:

For cropped body cameras, it's better to go as wide as you can. It's always easier to walk closer to your subjects than it is to back up... depending on the scenario. This is especially true if you're shooting indoors where space is limited.

IMO, and also the opinions of many, photobucket and their compression methods mar the quality of the photos uploaded.

meh, i like the dreamy effect it adds to that image with the ring. the flowers, the softness on the arms... the sharper detail with the lady's fingers and the ring is a good focal point.
