F-ed up my underbody plastics big time, I was dargging them for about 15 miles. This is going to push me to make this.
http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Horty24/underbodypanel.jpg
already drew it up in solidworks, I still need to get some dementions and add a oil change plate for easy access to it.
Looking to make this out of aluminum or titanium. I got a source for both materials :naughty: Might be a second before I get it done, but im looking for it to cover a bit more than the Beatrush one. Anyways wish me luck.

Yeah it's cheaper too. Cant think that the mounting of it is very difficult? I know beatrush uses brackets, so ive read. So i have to take of what i have remaining of my cheesy plasics to get some ideas.

You should make it so that it connects to the left and right wheel well plastics thus properly replacing all the underpanels. I could be wrong but I think I remember reading that a few people were having problems connecting the beatrush to the wheel well plastics just because of the design.
Also why stop with a front underpanel. You should just go ahead and make a 3-4 piece full body underpanel.
Those that want just the front can buy that and those that want the full thing can pay for the rest. I was planning on buying a beatrush panel and building the rest myself in a week or two but if your planning on starting thing I'll see how yours come along.
Good luck.

im for this idea... horty def knows his stuff :D the underbody plastics arent too complicated as im sure you're finding out. the only reason they dont use brackets is because they're slightly formed around some of the under-engine areas to where they curve back up to contact the underbelly. i dont think that would even been too much of a challenge for you though if you want to steer clear of brackets.

I'm trying to get my hands on a beatrush panel too because kamispeed is out of stock currently...obviously this was just posted a little bit ago, so it'll take awhile to get made but man I for one would love another option for an underpanel, esp if it was upgraded to any of the ideas above like incorporating the wheel wells or extending it to cover more then the front...My plastics got messed up too and I need something under there bad, I wish this would be online soon I'd totally be in for a group buy or something....
on another note what is it about this car that the underbody plastics suck so bad...prior to this car I'd never heard of messing up the underbody plastics, much less having it personally happen to me, so what is going on here hmmm??
also just out of curiousity what else has horty done? I've been around awhile but didn't know he's done custom stuff in the past and everyone seems so impressed that I'd love to check out the past projects

update:
finished drawing up brackets for the front. Will do a test fit as soon as they can cut them. Hope to get this quickly so I can start looking at rear mounting points and where to locate the bend lines. Looked at some aluminum sheet. Looks like my vendor can get me 5053 aircraft quality aluminum. pretty durable stuff, looking like ball park figure around $100-$125 shipped for the underpanel once this is complete.

Good stuff, you are the man. If these connect to the wheel well plastics then I'll definitely pick one up(maybe two since my girlfriend might need need one too).
Also you never responded to my(and others) comments on doing a full underbody is it something you would at-least consider after these are finnished?

The rear mounts to the control arms like the cusco bar. The front mounts to the radiator support with a 2 piece bracket. I can't really remember as its been 3-4 months since its come off.

The rear bracket for the beatrush panel does mount to the control arm. You loosen the bolt (a major pain in the ass by the way) and the bracket is shaped sorta like a hook, so it sits in between the bolt and the control arm when the bolt is tightened up. Hard to describe. Just had my panel off the other day to change the oil too, if i wouldve seen thiz thread i wouldve snapped a couple of pics for ya.

I was reading your idea, I was thinking maybe you will be better off if skip the underpanel, and go straight ahead to make a front wind splitter. it will have the same function as underpanel (i think) but it will give you better down force, MPG, Cool look etc. but then you will have to wrap that in CF to achieve appearance, or just paint it black.
KageRyu7
07-29-2011, 02:03 AM
I for one would not buy it if it was a wind splitter. I want something that keeps the oem look.

i agree, front windsplitter's a good idea but it a) doesnt really protect your engine bay from mud, water, snow, and salt (for those who live in snowy places) b) would be harder to install as there are people who have different front bumpers with different design and shape and c) i think it'll look better with the front under panel. like a mix between tuner and oem, less rice, more badass :bang:
a windsplitter would be a good add one piece in the future, not to expensive to manufacture and if horty uses the same holes for the clips as a way to mount the WS then that would make things even easier. but again, it'd have to be a more "down-the-road" type thing;)

very interested! mine started dragging just earlier this week. the plastic underpannels are held in by push clips. there are no threads, sadly. if you weld a nut on the top side of the pannel we could thread new bolts in and it would never come off.
but that's probably a stretch. cant wait to see the final product!

Well tha is the plan so the plastic panels can be secured to the undrpanel.
I mounted the beatrush today finally. got it yesterday after FedEx found it in the sort facility. I have to say i wont be able to expand it any wider because the wheels would hit it when they are turned all the way. I still have to fab up the rear brackets since they did not come with the underpanel. As for the under panel it self it has been drawn in solidworks and could cut now but like i said I want to add some holes for the plastics and possibly add ons down the road. Oh and also looking to adapt a oil change panel so you dont have to take the whole panel off.

Hey man i love the idea and have been trying to do the same thing. Im currently on deployment but when i get back am doing a full build on my car, new motor, turbo custom kit and a lot of fab work, which includes an underbody brush guard that extends about the front half of the car. So far only ideas especially when it comes to the oil pan and accessing the oil filter. But if you are trying to figure out a good way to make a small pannel that opens up i may be able to help you out a bit. PM me if you want some help with the project im more than happy to assist with whatever i can.

Got pretty much everything done. Will be cutting one by next week for test fit. More important the oil plate door. For oil changes. Pics are of the underpanel it self and the other is front bracket with oil plate door. Rear brackets are done. Holes down the sides are going to be to attach the side underpanel plastics. Thats still work in process. The final model will have a lot less holes down the sides.

Good call on welding the nuts to the bracket. I've always wondered why beatrush didn't do the same.

Horty, how much down time would it cause you to put in a hole for the tranny drain as well and what would be the increase in price?

Damn Horty looking good! It looks like I'll be cancelling my beatrush order then....only question is how come the slits weren't integrated like on the original? it looks like everything else was meticulously copied but you left those out just wondering why? At any rate I'm amazed at the work and very glad you've been able to make some improvements on it!
The Swede is numero uno on this group buy!!!!! ;D BRING IT ON!!!!

We do not have the ability to make those kind of bends here are work :(

It would not any to the price if its just a hole. I will have to look to see where the drain is.

I've been following this since last year lol I still have my order in with Kami but last I heard beatrush is backordered until June and then once they are in add 2 or 3 months shipping or some crazy shit I was like omg (meanwhile I have NOTHING for underbody plastics literally nothing they were so shredded I had to cut em off!) ...then this project started wrapping up and it looks like I will be saved! The minute the group buy starts going on my name will be on this list and I will cancel my order with Kami...

No worries buddy frankly lets be honest those are for like letting some heat escape and my car is a tuned up grocery getter not a race car you know?? Besides not having to take this thing off for every oil change?? Priceless! With the Kami one I thought to myself 1) the service guys are gonna hate this...and 2) Do I trust the service guys with this piece? Hell I'm thinking of buying 2 in case I decide to adopt another celica down the line...hows that saying go better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it :gap: Thanks for the service Horty it was guys like you that made owning my Legend so awesome and I'm glad the celica community has some of you too!

Will there be like a door to cover up the oil pan hole or is it just going to be open like that, also will the oil filter still be easily accessible?
meow_mix
05-25-2012, 10:05 PM
That would probably make the oil filter easy to take off and put on... I would imagine you could buy a sheet of aluminum and cut it to fit that hole, drill a few holes, and screw it on there if you want. :shrugs:
