The cool thing about this project was comin up with the staged alcohol injection system...

I can get 560 whp on 91 octane and just a splash of alcohol when needed under boost...
After I run out of the 100 oct. I'll switch back to 91 oct. and see how far the 2.2 gal. of alcohol lasts in the canyons.... This will give me the extended range I've been lookin for with all the power I could ever use in the real world...
The cool thing about tuning when it's 100*f is that you know its right where it needs to be under the worst conditions...

Thanks guys, I have to say there are no mechanical changes made just a 2 psi. increase in boost pressure and tune on a 40*f hotter ambient temp day...no knock detected and a 36 whp gain..

You just have to tell your tuner you want it fuqcin perfect and you can always see an improvment.... It's always the tuner that gets the most out of the hard parts...

Sweet - congrats Frank! You should be happy with it for at least a week and a half now!

the ronin

Less... I have to change out the wastegate spring, we were getting a drop in boost pressure in the higher RPM since we were tryin to correct for a 9 lb. wastegate spring while tryin to keep a steady 30 psi. We were just beyond the range of the solenoid control and a much better header design allowing the exhaust gasses a straight shot to the wastegate..

I know I should just leave it but I hate to see a wavy dyno graph....
So it'll just be a slight readjustment of the boost control which we can do on the street and leave it at a solid 30 psi. and that should keep the torque from droppin off....

And then I'm done..:wiggle:

Boosted2.0

And then I'm done..:wiggle:

I would like to bet you on this. The smart money says that you've blown up or are screwing with something else on the car within 45 days of wastegate adjustment.

How much you care to wager? :naughty:

Just a little tweekin to be done now.... My throttle is a little sticky after being slamed with high boost pressures for the last three years so that is gonna get replaced with a stock spare. I hate iratic idle speeds...

Then I have to burn through a few tanks to get an idea how long the alcohol will last.. Happy Hour in the canyons :wiggle:

Tentatively ?
Do you see anyone in my rear view ?
Being smooth doesn't mean it's not being driven hard...
When some one is sawin away at the wheel is a sure sign they don't know the car and are more than likely gonna screw up but if you feel 60 mph around a 20 mph corner without crossin the centerline and 120 down the short straights isn't pushin it you are welcome to try and keep up...

2KGTS
09-14-2011, 05:54 AM
I'm not trying to argue or hate, here. But that car could be driven harder, especially around turns, etc. that you have to take more slowly because they're blind. I didn't get more than a minute into your vid for just that reason. *Shrug* If you hit it hard later, good on you.

the ronin
09-14-2011, 08:07 AM
Well if you just want to see someone wreck to know if there car can perform I recomend NASCAR... If you want to see a car that can smoke just about anything in the canyons enjoy the video or not.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmsCGq2bnBs&feature=youtu.be

I take it you have never driven in the mountains with the compleatly different dynamics to high speed cornering and on off power transitions when going down hill vs uphill....

What looks easy isn't. To get a better feel of the real speed just keep your eye on the passenger window and imagne trying to hold your head straight in a rollercoaster..
One of these days I'll get a data logger to show the G loads in the video..

Oh and I never see any Evo or Subi in the twisties why is that ?

*Laugh* I'm just not gonna argue with you, man. Enjoy your car.

There's no argument when only one person know the difference between driving smoothly and hacking at the wheel....Maybe you should watch both videos all the way through and tell me how it's done quicker..
I've been driving these canyons for 30 yrs. in everything from a CJ5 Jeep to 900 hp Group B rally cars and most everything in between...

The flat track is only a test of a cars performance if the driver knows the track and the car... I know how my car handles the canyons and that's what it's setup for..

No one could drive it harder without crossin the centerline or going off the cliff and it's still the fastest Lotus at Willow Springs Raceway and that was 4 yrs. ago with only 290 whp..

Out of curiosity, have you ever run in those california canyons? Because if you haven't you can't really understand just how fast eh is going.

Keep in mind that one side fo the road is always a 250 - 800 foot drop. You mess up bad and you die. You cross the line, you head-on and die.

I did a run with some old tires fitted to my alltrac when I first got it, and spun and wound up with my R/F tire and the pass door hanging out over a 550 ft drop. If I had been going 5 or 10 MPH faster it probably would have been game over.

As such, some amount of common sense is a good thing in the canyons. Trust me, Frank is driving damn hard for those conditions.

Funny thing is on this strech of road they found a guy that was missing for four days over the side. The thing that saved him was that his car landed on top of another car that had been down there for a while with its driver dead in the seat.... Only the guys kids took the time to scout every corner/drop off looking for him....

There are a number of cars lost there every year, that's the main reason there is so little traffic...... You fquek up you die and no one will know where you were...

They are from Okada and have been dyno'd multiple x's to add hp..a must especially under heavy boost, supposedly the charge is amp'd up to the point that they create plasma, too bad they only make em for the 2zz and not the 1.

Hey guys so after beatin on the car for the last 8 months with max power at 680 whp and the custom heavy duty ACT single plate clutch I've developed a slight tick in the bottom end. This sounded like a early sign of rod bearing wear but after pullin the pan and inspection it turns out it is the trust bearings that are givin up the ghost and losing meterial found in the bottom of the pan.....
Now here's the thing I ran the car for a few days with 20-50 Royal Purple oil and the hottest the oil temps got was 210*f hear in So Cal.
I've always run 5-40 Mobil 1 before and never had any bearing issues..

Here's what I think is going on ..... The engine oil is not thining out enough to coat the bearings under startup and light load on the Hwy along with the heavy clutch pressure plate in stop and go traffic putting to much of a load on the trust bearings causing crank walk....
On the Hwy water temps are 160*f and oil temps are also 160*f, I'm just too cool for 20-50...

I'll post pics here for you guys to follow along.. http://www.lotussport.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4527

Makes sense. Maybe time to switch to a twin disc with less pedal effort required?

Or get the thrust bearings coated with dry film lubricant and see how they hold up that way. I could also send you a quart of TX7 if you want to see if that helps a bit - that exactly the kind of situation it was developed for.

Celicasaur
02-08-2012, 09:37 AM
Thanks for sharing man, that seems pretty plausible. Could well have been caused by both factors, but my money (all five bux of it) would be on the clutch/harsh engagements putting excess strain on the thrust bearings.

Are you running the ACL thrust bearings, or OEM?

the ronin
02-08-2012, 09:44 AM
All bearings are ACL from Monkey Wrench racing..

The problem with the twin disc setups is that they all drive like crap on the street and in traffic it will truly suck... I tried the Clutch Masters setup and their street version lost half it's friction material in a month...so I'll stick with the ACT and the proper wight oil for the 2ZZ.

I'll take you up on your TX7 offer Dave.

I hate having to pull the drivetrain and not make any more power when it goes back together.....Repairs suck....modifications are cool.

02-08-2012, 09:46 AM
Ah Ronin, i was wondering when you would get crankwalk with that heavy pressure plate. i have been wondering when i would get bit with the heavy pressure plate im using. was just the bearing damaged or was the crank and block tore up too?

the ronin
02-08-2012, 09:50 AM
The engine is out will get torn down later today, there is some play but I think I caught it early.
I'll be at Mikes this afternoon to eyeball the bits.

the ronin
02-08-2012, 07:28 PM
So there is good news the trust bearings look new and no signs of wear... The bad news is the noise seems to have come from the clutch disc, the springs were all in place but very loose and there was some fracturing around them...
Good news is I have a spare so it's not going to slow the rebuild and replace down.....

Now Mike was quick to point out two cracks in the Deeds Performance header which could also cause a ticking sound...So Mike will do his thing and weld the **** out of it...Mikes welds never crack..

Oh yeah check this out it seems that the Ferrea 1mm oversized valves are having an issue with the Wiesco 9/1 pistons...Not as bad as the first Mahle and the valves need to be checked for straightness now.

Smaay
02-08-2012, 10:25 PM
might have to dish out the pistons more to support oversized valves

so what pistons now? the new cosworth ones? I had some custom Ross ones made to spec. Rated to 900hp

the ronin
02-10-2012, 04:51 PM
Wiesco, with new beefy wrist pins and new Carillo rods... If anyone is telling you something is rated to a HP number they don't know what the fuqk they're talkin about..... I'm pushin out over 180 HP per cylinder that's about 30 over the limit.... The pistons were fine it was the standard taper bore wrist pins that gave up umder the high rpm and 36 psi. load..

The stock pins were .142 taper and the new pins are .175 non taper.

bt216
02-10-2012, 06:14 PM
yeah it was more of..."these should handle 900hp" blah blah.

the ronin
02-11-2012, 08:27 AM
Well we now know the max rating for the Wiesco wrist pins is under 580whp in a 2ZZ so as long as you keep it under 25 psi. you will be good...Push it to 680 and have your parts guy on speed dial..
I got away lucky concedering what could have happened... I've pushed the envelope open.

Impressive!

Congrats Frank!

Can you guys believe that this video was posted on Lotus Talk and nobody even gave a s$hit! Fvcken jealous and snobs if you ask me.
A true racer test the car and his comments where:

So I went for a little shake down cruise in the twisties and came to stop at the overlook on Mulholland 's Snake to shoot the brezze with some of my biker buddies.
After a while i see an Evorsa and a couple of pickups pull in to do a photo shoot. It turns out it was Townsend Bell who is driving the Evora for Alex Job Racing along with a few peeps from Wheel Pros....
http://www.townsendbell.com/racing/news ... eries.html

I met Townsend a few years back when he was doing a show on Speedvision with Taner Foust doing a driver / car shoot out with the Sector 111 Exige vs Porsche and Ferrari. He saw my car and instantly asked if he could take it for a drive so I tossed him the keys and told him to keep it below 8,000 rpm and let me know what he thought when he got back up to the look out...

So he runs down the snake and back up with a **** eating grin on his face..... The first thing he says when he gets out is that it was the fastest car he's ever driven and compared the acceleration with an F1 car, he then said he wished my engine was in his Lotus GTE race car that he will be driving in the American Le Mans Series

Ha! Seriously. Well said. http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/f3/townsend-bell-drives-compound-charged-lotus-112211/

A legit race car driver who's so thoroughly impressed - you can see it on his face and hear his words, add to that he's so obviously floored by the whole experience of driving the "rocket pig"; and those, as Frank likes to say ****s (rhymes with runt) can't even give the man and his car some props. I drive sports cars for a living and I've never driven anything faster than this (at least until this morning, when I may have driven something faster for next week's episode)"....

BOOK OF LOTUS, CHAPTER 6

Lo, and the Lord gave unto Profera a Lotus, and it was good.

"But Lord," said Profera, "this Exige isn't fast enough."

And the Lord gave unto Profera a turbo, which displaced the supercharger. And it was good.

"But Lord," said Profera, "this Exige still isn't fast enough."

And the Lord gave unto Profera a bigger turbo. And it was good.

"But Lord," said Profera, "this Exige still isn't fast enough."

"Jesus, Frank!", said the Lord, "what how fast do you want that thing?!"

"I don't want to wait for it to pull and I don't ever want it to stop pulling," said Profera.

And the Lord said, "Sorry, Frank, I'm out of ideas."

And Profera was woebegone.

And the Devil appeared and said unto Profera, "Psst, hey Frankie! Back in the 80's, we did some crazy ****. People were going so crazy ****ing fast that they were disintegrating. It was awesome!"

Profera said, "What do I need to do?"

The Devil showed Profera that the supercharger AND the turbocharger could live and work in concert and create transmission melting power that sent his Exige to mind-numbing speeds.

And Profera drove his creation happily with instant power that never ceased, and it was good.

Now can I get an Amen ?

Hey, now! I'm no hater!

I'm simply saying I don't get the same sense of speed I guess others do watching these clips. On a road course, with other vehicles, screaming up on them through the straights, tearing away from then in the curves, etc., etc. is what gets my blood going.

I understand I may be more unique in that. But that's what I like to see, is all. I don't refute one bit that this car is uber-fast, sexy, and rocks wall-to-wall. I'm just saying that these clips don't impress me. *Shrug* And I'm NOT trying to hate! I love what you're doing and what you've built. My eyes light up when it's competitive, not lead and follow. *Shrug*

Take a vacation to LA, rent something decent and head to the canyons and you will gain an appreciation for how fast he is going. You will also have the time of your life gaining that appreciation. A couple days on Angeles Crest, Angeles Crest national forest drive, and some of the others will give you quite the appreciation for those roads.

OR you can drive there and do it in your Celica or EVO which would actually be even better since you have major comfort factor in either of those cars. The cool thing is there are tons of things for the family to do while you are there (Disney, six flags, KNotts Berry farm, etc)

hello,
From France where i live, the Fastest Exige was a mystery to be explored and feeled !
i know frank for a few years now , i met him a few times and i have been following his R+D. So now it was time to see him again and see his Final step Ronin Exige ! and sit inside for a ride of course.

there is hardly no words to explain how this car is magic ! the sound of this 1.8 engine taking rivs with the exhaust sound !
the turbo waste gate sound each time you shift...
but most incredible is the way this car is usable in the city traffic and at low speed on HW ! smooth but then ...
when you take the canyon and open full , the video game starts and project you in another dimension !
Crazy !!! the power is coming without any lag and goes till the 8500 rpm , 2nd, 3rd, 4th gears and an incredible power which is always there ! the rear wheels are never loosing traction and after each corner the car jump ahead so fast...After 2 hours inside the canyon i was still surprised at each corner exit by the engine response to the throttle and the amazing exhaust sound of the turbo... i was smiling ! i was even more smilling waiting for the next corner !!

overall there is such a perfect balance with the chassis, the suspension , the rear wheels and the perfect setting of the power via the ECU, this car is always predictable, but it seems to be in an accelated movie !!! every corner seems so close from the previous one ! it goes so fast !! is it so homogeneous.
Frank brought me to the canyon and there is nothing which can be so efficient, so quick ! (i bet you cannot even imagine the feeling of each acceleration !!) and somohow easy to drive ! (by Frank which knows exactly the limits).

many thanks for this magic moment ! Your R+D has been made till the balance of a perfectly usable and most powerfull Exige.

i suggest to some people always ready for critics to make the same, or at least to try this car before opening their mouth !

a very special moment ! my most impresive experience in a car !

thanks Frank for this very special moment ! now i look forward to my next trip to california for a ride again...

The Lotus F1 Team should as a minimum fly you over to an F1 race and ask you about building a proper Lotus! Watched all your vids on youtube and just WOW - no other word comes to mind.

Don't waste time responding to idiots who complain, that's time you could be spending driving that awesome car of yours. Remember.....
