ever since i laid my eyes on the 7th gen toyota celica i loved it. i was on this forum every day for about a year so far and the more im on this sight the more i like the car. but my dad took me for a test drive in an red 2000 auto gts...if i was ever able to afford a celca i would get a manual but i hate to say it but i wasnt satisfied with the car at all...my dad kept complaining about the plastic dash and the lack of head room (hes' 6 2) and hes used to luxery cars. the car was extremely slow. and the e shift or what ever didnt work. and if i ever do get any $$$ my dad will give me a hard time if i get a GTS and i dont like the RSX S so there are no cars that i would be able to afford that i like.

Well I had the auto (look in my sig) and there is a big difference between the two. I didn't drive it hard yet cause I'm still learning but my dad did. It's deffinetly different. I would suggest taking another test drive in the manual.

I have a 2000 auto GTS.. I suggest you tell your dad to stay behind and you take it out. Find a quiet straight side street, put it in e-shift, floor it, when it hits 76k rpm (i think) then up shift and it should shift a little pass redline once the computer finishes thinking.. the auto isnt that fast, but having a second person, especially someone like your dad who is really tall doesnt help in the accelleration.

I do want a manual myself, but the auto suits me just fine personally

Good call kuno... I didn't even think of that. It does slow it down significantly with other people in the car.

you defanatly cant pass judgement on a 6 speed gts by going into an auto. thats like way worse than apples and oranges, thats like a bus as opposed to a mini van......6spd and auto are two different cars practically.

Manual is cheaper then auto....

All I can tell you is that when you hit third gear your gone in a manual. This car is a beast.

ive driven both the auto gts and i have a 6 speed.
it feels like there are two totally different engine's in them.
the auto is slow as hell(sorry auto guys).
i drove a gt 5 speed and it was a hellava lot faster than the auto gts.
auto will make a huge difference when you have a 4 banger.
if it was a v8 it wouldn't make that big of a difference
drive both!!!!!!!

i have an auto gt and i have test driven the 6sp gts and 5sp gt...why did i get the auto gt you say!? one word "parents"..the 5sp and 6sp are wayyyy faster and much more fun to drive and i do prefer to have a manual..but i dont see why there is so much complaining in having an auto celica..take it to about 3k and its going with traffic..take it to 4k and its faster than the other cars around u and your movin just fine and dandy...i can see the problem of having an auto if you are a speedracer and u just need to have lift at every stop but other than that i give the auto celicas  sure there not manual fast but there good enough...what else is your dad going to think if hes coming from luxury cars and hes 6'2?? take the car out for yourself and drive it...the plastic dash is fine with me! not a single scratch yet "knocks on wood" just spray a light coat of armor all and its set! but other than that auto celi's are just fine for everyday driving and some mountain driving! hey we still got that suspension!

Your dad is use to low down torque of a larger displacement engine found in Luxury cars. There is a world of difference between a manual and Auto GT-S. The engine is designed to be rev'd to get the most out of it.

do not get an AUTO if you're looking into proformance :werd:

What you need to do is gut the car, do not allow any passengers and find a nice downhill slope to drive down.

if the car is for you, YOU test drive it. and just floor it, and hold the pedal down in first gear. that little surge at 6000+rpm will be magnified and pull harder in the manual. plus the manual pulls stronger off the line (the auto doesn't at all, especially a low mileage stock one).

will give you a good taste of what you can really get your hands into when you get the manual :werd:

although, i don't know how old you are or if you know how to drive stick, so do take it easy. if you couldn't figure out the e-shift, i'm a bit more worried. (press the buttons on the back to shift UP, and the buttons on the fron to shift DOWN. to put it into e-shift mode, move the shift lever to the left while in D (towards the 'M'), when you do it, a 'M Mode' light will pop on in the dash)

Celica is performance sport coupe~ its not suppose to be luxuries vehicle.. i believe target age group for celica was 16-21 when they first release this car back in 1999. i have 2000 6spd GT-S n i suggest you get a 2003 GT-S 6spd~ you'll love it~

no way dude, get a 2002, those are the special models bro...special it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside when you come to this forums and people say how great the 2002 is. What a car! Toyota knows what they are doing making the 2002 special. 2002 forever dude!

I think the target was much higher than that. how many 16-21 year olds do you know that can afford a 23k+ car? Not many compared to the total consumer market. It would be stupid of toyota to market a 23k+ car to such a young crowd. id say the target market for the gt-s is somewhere around 21-36 years old, but that doesnt mean others can't/won't buy it.

If you get an auto I will be forced to destory you. no really they get you were you going but they just aren't that fast. If you have to get an auto, get the GT, its really not that much slower.

2 words for ya:

Nuff said. He's right about the target age although I think it stretches a wee bit higher than 21 (more like 26). The Celica and Echo were the great white hope for Gen X buyers. I dunno if they are hitting their target audience, but I'll say this, the Celica rocks, and for a cheap cheap cheap daily driver the Echos pretty damn nice (as long as ya don't look at the exterior)

You gotta love this guy! Well said Chui.

Seriously though... you can't really EXPERIENCE a car in an automatic... theres just not enough of a link between you and the car. BMW used to have some cheesy commercial about where teh car and teh driver become one... theres a lot to be said for that, and its something I've only ever truly experienced with a LOT of hours behind the wheel of a particular car. I'll tell ya what, I could drive the wheels off my FX-16 GTS, and my MR2, and SORTA my Celca GTS (although I never did autocross it). But man - all the mechanics of driving the car became so second nature that they became totally subconscious to an almost frightening extent. Just dont get that in an Auto, the sensations just too.... mushy.

Age of this kid might play a part. Sounds like I or we need to give them a ride or show them how to drive it.

the e sh!t...is some what of a manual mode for the auto but it shifts really slow ( the computer needs a XP2000+):)

ArchangelX
08-25-2002, 10:52 PM
I'd have to say..that if the car came with more power and better response time, the e-shift would be cool as hell.

Could you imagine a 1/4 mile run with 300+ horses without ever having to take your hands off the wheel or your foot off the pedal. :gap:

I think that's why that guy from EIP or whever it was got his Auto GT-S turbo'd. I bet he feels cool as hell now.

Push buttons are cool. :D

Damn, all I know, is I wish I had a mommy and daddy to buy me a car. Must be nice to be a rich, spoiled brat. From the age of 13 on, anything I wanted I had to work for. My folks were broke, barely made enough money to clothe and feed me. A new car, ha, that's a laugh, I didn't get my first new car until I was 26 years old, no one helped me with that.

You never appreciate **** when it's just handed to you. What the hell are your parents doing looking at a $23,000 sport car with you? They should be putting your ass in a Kia or Hyundia until you can afford to buy your own car. Better yet, go look at used cars. Damn rich parents spoiling their kids.

Hmm...DGS...I think...umm..I think he's paying for it. As in himself, without daddy.

I think his dad just went to go with him on the test drive. He didn't phrase it really that way.

Although I feel your pain...I had to walk back and forth to school everyday, even when I was a Senior. Although I could afford the car, my grandma couldn't afford the insurance for me...so I never had a car until I was 19 years old. :(

and i forgot to mention when we where in the celica we had 3 people in the car my dad, my friend (who is bigger than me about 160) and me (about 150). my dad and i are car junkies like most of us on this board. i would love to afford a celica but i know that wont happen any time soon. thats why i want to get a job next summer as soon a possible so i can start savin for a half way decent car when im 17 or 18

Good for you! I mis-understood you first post. I thought your father was just going to buy you a $23,000 car for your first vehicle, and I also didn't read that you are only 13. Trust me, if you save enough to put down a deposit when you are of legal driving age, and YOU make the monthly payments on your car, it will be much more rewarding for you, knowing you got the car on your own. Plus, you'll have the added benefit of being able to get what you want, rather than being at the mercy of whatever your father wants to buy you. And, if will be excellent way for you to establish good credit (as long as you don't make a late payment) even if you need to have your father co-sign to help you get the loan.

I'm 31 years old, never had a damn thing handed to me in my life, but that's the way it should be. I see so many rich, spoiled brats here in Dallas (especially SMU students), who drive around in brand new cars their parents bought them, they have no base in reality. You talk to these kids, and they think it's normal they should be driving around in a $35,000 BMW at the age of 18. They can't comprehend that everyone's parent don't buy them a new, expensive car when they get a drivers licesense.

Wow! 150lbs at age 13? Damn, you're one big guy!

BTW, good attitude for such a young guy, wish there were more like you in the world nowadays. I still gotta sour taste in my mouth from the other post about the kid who "made my mom buy me an Injen CAI" and was at awe about people actually spend their own money on car parts and upgrades and, heaven forbid, the cost of the actual car.

Oh yeah, I used to race around on a BMX too. Found one in a ditch, sandblasted and repainted the whole thing, and wallah! New bike.......kinda
