View Full Version : Celica GT-S Auto + TK.COM Turbo?
Wondering if anyone has turboed the auto gt-s with the turbokits.com turbo (7-8 psi)?
Any issues?
I'm worried about the tranny overheating ans was thinking of running an external cooler for the tranny that is separate from the radiator.
Can anyone provide any feedback? Has this been done before? Is it a bad idea?
Any info is appreciated.

Yes it's been done before. I would suggest searching the site first. I know There are a few S/C Auto setups also.
What are your goals? Just to run a stock TK.com setup?

Uniqgts(sp?) has turbo'd his auto. I think he might have blown a couple trans along the way though. :shrugs:
S/C would probably be easier but way less potential when it comes to higher hp numbers with the auto.
I'm looking to pull about 220-240 to the wheels... and yes just the basic tk.com set up.
I wouldn't think this would add that much stress to the tranny - I figured heat yes... hence the external cooler... but I don't know if it would do more damage.
Yea I have noted some s/c setup but I think the cost to benefit on an s/c rig is minimal...
This is why I was looking at turbo

How about you get it, put it on, and then let us know :o:

Lol those trannies are weak, no way they can take the force of a Turbo charged engine, ud need to rebuild the entire tranny plus modify it with performance clutches and shift kits so it can withstand it or itll blow shortly after, tunings critical u can easily burn the tranny if ur shift points aren't on point

I'm worried about this. I was thinking to drop in a 6spd manual with lsd but the cost of that with labour is like 2k less than a whole decent shape celica lol...
So I'm stuck with auto and looking at options now.

Nitrous with a window switch? :shrugs:
Cheap and then once the trans is shot, swap in the 6spd.
Not really interested in nitrous.

When running the AT, it's a good idea to upgrade to an eManage Ultimate so you have over rev control during shifts. Also, give LevelTen or IPT a call. They can probably do some work to your tranny for under $1000 to help it hold the power.

I've heard that the auto is NOT weak at all and that a racing team (on here I believe) had about 500 hp in slightly modified auto tranny. I've heard it can handle more power than the manual. So Azure where'd you get your information? Automatic bigotry?
Don't quote me on that, look for the thread it was posted in.

You could just swap it in yourself. There is a write up on here of how to do it.

I may be of some assistance on this topic. I have a 2000 GTS that is auto and turboed. I am tuned for 377whp on 17psi, but hardly ever boost that much. My stock setting is 7psi, which I believe puts me at about 275whp and is plenty of fun with a proper tune. I have had some tranny issues although they are not nearly as weak as some are trying to make you believe. When I talked to Matt at MWR about the auto tranny he told me that it is actually a fairly strong tranny. When I first slapped on my turbo kit I already had a beat up tranny with over 110,000 miles on it so when my first one took a dump on me I was expecting it plus I am running a larger turbo than you will be.(gt2871R) I picked another tranny for fairly cheep I think it was $600 or something with only 40,000 miles on it and I have been rocking this one for a while now. With all of that said I think you would be fine with running the hp your looking to run on our stock trans, but it wouldnt be a bad idea to look into a cooler. I dont know how much you have thought about it, but if you are still saving...a manual swap first wouldnt be a horrible idea. With the hp your looking to put down a C60 would hold up fine I believe. Either way though you will have a blast. The only reason I havent is because when I do go manual I will also up my boost and the C60 will deff not hold that power. Hopefully this helps you and if you have anymore questions feel free to PM me.

Thank you for the very informative reply. I'm hesitant to switch to manual because I'm looking at about $4500 to get that done then about another $5000 for the turbo. It's not the cost that bothers me as much as looking at the cost vs benefit. Sure it will be manual, and I've only ever driven manual since this car, but I often have to take it in to downtown for work and manual + rush hour = very annoying. This is why I bought a tiptronic car to begin with. Now if I do a 6spd manual with a racing clutch it is going to be a serious pain in the ass to drive on a daily basis.
I'm not looking to push any insane amount of horsepower. About 240 to the wheels and I would be happy as the car is fairly light to begin with. I'm more in to cornering and handling than pedal to the floor straight road driving.
I'll send you a pm.

I've heard that the auto is NOT weak at all.
To each his own, my opinion still stands
500 hp in slightly modified auto tranny..
like i said needs to be modified to handle that power
I've heard it can handle more power than the manual..
I dunno if it can but even so, its weaker since too much power is lost due friction of mechanical components compared to a manual
So Azure where'd you get your information? Automatic bigotry?..
I work in a Transmission Shop so if seen my fair share :gap:
Don't quote me on that
Just did:love:

lol Azure....I think I love you. I've never had a post quoted like that in a civil manner on any forum ever :P . It's refreshing.
But yeah, as for your definition of weaker, you're definitely right on that one. I just meant that it won't fall apart when a bit more power than stock looks at it right in the eyes.
too much power is lost due to friction
I dunno why, but this struck me as funny  Define "too much"!
But to be fair, there seems to be a lot of people racist against automatics on this site. I'm just trying to balance it out a little.
As far is modifications, I want to say they improved an oil pump? when they had their 500hp. Not sure, I read it a while back but I'm sure it's still here. I think r3d should be good without too much mods on his tranny.
Haha I think it's Monkeywrench racing that's getting >800whp from a turbo'd Celica with >40 psi of boost. I'm not sure they're using a stock manual or auto!!! Once you reach a certain point, you just gotta take it to the next level.
I'm probably not the most qualified person to listen to, I'm just saying there's a little bit more research to be done than "Auto suuux, getzz manualz lul".

Too Many ppl have their shift knobs to far up their arse to know the difference
Manual is for pleasure
Auto is point A to point B or ridiculous amount of power no man can control
but thats my opinion
Define "too much"!
if u wanna get technical, i read somewhere about 15% of power is loss from the engine to the wheels with an automatic and 8-10% on a manual, correct me if im wrong :gap:
ol Azure....I think I love you.

I read ur thread ages ago, something about so much power it scared the sh!t out u and impossible to DD :gap:

id say go manual cornering and handling is funner,on an auto all ur gonna do is tilt the sterring wheel and press the brakes...thats it :tumble: but then again Daily driving, turboing, and Traffic are like the triple negatives to kill an engine faster so idk

If your goal is just 220-230whp.. I think no need to upgrade auto tranny !!
Just bolt on turbo (GT2870R) And Boost 7-8 Psi with good piggyback~
You'll happy with that ! :)
Thanks for all the informative replies everyone.
sillycar09 - This is the goal for now. If I want more in the future I will do what is needed to achieve it.
Does anyone know if you HAVE to get the AEM EMS for an auto or can you use the greddy emanage ultimate piggyback as well? The reason I ask is because the greddy goes for 700$ new while the full ECU replacement AEM EMS goes for 1800$...
Anybody know?

I know that you can use a system called Hydra, but not many tuners are fimilular with that program so I wouldn't recommend it.
