What is the best method for having this piece painted. I dont want to paint over all of the lettering and stuff, so what are my other options? thanks

Take it to a shop and ask them to mask it off. More than a few people have had this done and it works fine. If you're gonna do it yourself, get some fine line masking tape (flexible, so it can make curves without bleeding paint through) and newspaper and mask it off.

i've done a vinyl overlay to mask it...... put it on.... bring it to the shop..... removed the vinyl overlay and there's the results!!!! amazing!!

I masked it off myself with fine line tape. Took me about 10 minutes. I left a little more unpainted than the pic above, but it still looks pretty good. I used automotive paint from my dad's shop and even did a coat or 2 of clear. ;) I will post pics of my car and painted interior this weekend.

How do you avoid getting paint on the furry part of the climate control panel. I mean the stuff behind the switch that slides left or right.

I didn't. hehe I just painted that too. Would have been way to much work to mask that part off. Just my opinion.

I know that if a customer brought it to my dad to mask off, he would do it however they wanted him to, so I am sure they will.

But it still has the gray around it. I have seen other pictures that people have painted that are the same way. Has anyone figured out a way to paint all of it one color, then have the images put back on? I have thought of painting them on with a small brush, but don't trust my hands to do it cleanly. Till then, I just have my controls memorized.

I think most people dont paint over them so they light up still...if you paint over them and then draw on the pictures....you wont be able to see it at night....

Send it to me, and I will mask it off for you and send it back. Then you can paint it yourself. It's really easy.

well thats really nice of you....the problem however does not lie with the masking of the piece, it lies in the paint. I want it to look really glossy like a bodyshops job. I saw pics of someone that did there own and it look so dull. also, i dont think i would be able to match the red. Is there a trick to making this paint job look professional? I did interior pieces already, i used about 3-4 coats paint and then same about of coats clear coat. It looked pretty glossy, just not as glossy and clean as a body shops job. would primer or some kinda of emalsifier and some sanding fix this? if so, i might take you up on that offer yota_Racer!

All I did, was scuffed the surface a little with some scotch brite. Then I used flexible parts primer followed by a couple coats of a basecoat automotive paint, and finished it off with a couple coats of clear. My dad used his paint gun for the job, and it looks great. No problems yet, but he only did it last week. hehe

Yeah I bought one of gt2000quebecs vinyl overlays and the shop forgot to use it and sprayed over everything... but I've just learned where the controls are (no choice)
I can't afford gas :D

you should see if you can get new stickers to put on for the emblems. celicauk had custom gauges made, and the company that made em also does emblems. i talked to them, they said they could do them. wouldn't light up at night really but at least it'd be something.

It's very glossy. Just go look at 2001 Red Jetta. That's the color I used.

Thanks for posting those scotty, that blue looks really good, too bad about the body shop not using the kit. I'm gonna get one of those too, as soon as I get the money to have it painted.
