How did you get the Black Headlights? I really like that.

did it myself - open up the headlights by means of some sort of heat (i used a heat gun becuase I dont trust the oven, plus i get more control over where the heat goes), pry it open, paint the piece, reassmble.

where do you get that heat gun?:D

pokgai

my friend had the heat gun. but actually a hair dryer works fine. Just takes a little bit longer.

I have many hair dryers at my house, and the ones that are newer suck. Like they blow hard (no pun intended) but arent very hot. I found this older one, and man the thing gets hot. You can adjust the temp and the speed.

If its very hot in your area, i suggest you wait until night time to do this, so you dont die of dehydration (too much sweating). Also let the paint dry before you touch it. Nothing is worse than a FAT fingerprint smudge on the paint.

good job.....but honestly all..the oven's soooo much easier than just sitting there w/ a blow dryer for an hour.......doesn't mess a friggin' THING up on your light 'cept soften the glue....you can even hold the whole thing in your hands.....lil' hot..but not even that much.......Blue Bomber can give you any extra needed tips....

black DOES look nice....Chris helped me do mine in silver....I suck at painting!

well i just got done taking apart the spare headlight.
it was pretty easy.
i did the oven method and it didn't mess anything up.
than i just seperated it.
its not that hard at all to take it apart.
im sure i could of taken it apart if my car was out in the AZ heat for a little bit.

Why not a semi-transparent tint instead of a solid color? I actually prefer the stock look of the lights, but I think smoked would be the next best.

Errr.... scratch that...

Eli, so when are we doing Chico's, Your's and Mine? :chuckles:

if you still want the texture, there are 2 methods i can see about attaining the texture look. 1) Paint the underside of the plastic, so you can see the texture and it will be dark/black. 2) Spray the outside (top) with clear black (smoke) paint.

I didnt get on the roof to take the pics, it was at my friend's house; his balcony :)

Eh about the oven thing, I guess its easier, probably hella easier. But I just felt more comfortable using the heatgun since thats how I did it before. Do whatever you want, whatever is more convenient to you, not what people say. Also I don't think my parents would like the idea of sticking the expensive headlights in the oven (you know parents). Just liek nccelica said in his writeup, "make sure your folks are out of the house cuz you dont want them to know what you are puttin in the oven" or something close to that.

hey pokgai,

notice that you have the HKS springs.. how are they? good stuff? how's the ride and the drop compared to TRD?

well ill do mine first and show you guys how it looks.
after that ill take apart you guys headlights but i wont paint them.
i cant paint for sh*t so im taking mine to a shop.
taking them apart is cake:)
just put in a towel and the headlight on top of it for 10 minutes or so.
you just pry them apart after that.

How hott? Man I would never do this with my parents around they would kill me.

300 degrees then put light in, as soon as you close the oven door, TURN THE HEAT OFF!!!!! let sit for 15 mins....take out..

putting back together same concept

same as before..just piece it back together as good as possible before placing in...heat up, take out push back together...the glue will bond again and seal nicely ;)

when taking apart, you MAY have to leave in a little longer(no more than 5 mins) to get glue apart...at our baking session, had to do that w/ one of my lights.....stubborn glue....should be a cinch though! good luck all!

Hey has anyone here done any with a Carbon Blue Celica .. I want to get mine done but I'm thinking black on the blue would look foolish

SF GT
08-28-2002, 12:46 PM
They'll work with any color celica imo.

WillyWonka
08-28-2002, 01:00 PM
Yes, Nate22 has a Carbon Blue Celica and it looks just fine. He used silver if I remember correctly. I painted one of them, but the paint vapors must be causing amnesia. For my red Celica, I used black (not divulging the exact type for reasons of uniqueness ;) ). There are so many combinations you can use. Just give it some thought considering the present or future full color scheme of your car.

does painting the inside distort the headlight beams any?
they all look really good but if possible id rather keep clean night vision

it will not affect the beams in any way. you're not painting the parts of lights where the light projects. you're painting the surrounding parts of the assembly...
