Looks like an antenna, but that would be a very strange place........
If it is, what would be the reason to put it there ???????

I think the thing pops up so that you can judge the distance of the corner of the car relative to a nearby object, in tight corners for instance.

quicksilver is correct. there is a little light at the end and it gives the driver an idea how close he/she is next to an object. i lived in japan for 2 yrs and one of ours cars had one.

That is the weirdest **** I have ever seen. I guess they must do a lot of close quarters driving in Japan.

they also have motorized mirrors that tuck away when the car is off (I believe)

I hear in Japan it's impossible to park. Definitely a ghey thing though.

no parking because half of them dont know how to park a car. It's all bikes for them.

Actually a lot of places just dont have parking spots at all. Many people don't have cars.
That little dealybob is like $210.00 US... pretty expensive for a damn popup stick.

It makes it take up less space and with todays skinny parking spaces it's a nice feature. I know my mirrors don't allow much room when I part right next to several other big vehicles.

If you have ever lived in korea or japan, you would definitely want one of those on ur car. :) LA/NY traffic is a walk in the park compared to driving/parking in the city of those countries. I know cuz I lived in both countries. :)

actually that thing can be used anywhere in the world. it sticks up so you can see the opposite front end of you car, that way you would have an idea of the limit is and so you would not scratch it away on a wall or something. Its usually used on large sedans so it would be considered lame to put it on a celica...

I totally agree w/ Redline. If u've travelled much to Japan, which I did, parking is an art. U gotta know how to squeeze ur car into this tiny spot in order to park. Those probes are definitely helpful. Almost all cars in Japan come w/ that option, or u can always install an aftermarket one. Parking in US is nothing compared to parking in Tokyo city.
