However JAP WAS used in a deragatory fashion in WW2. Nonetheless I think gettign offended by words like that just gives the people who actually use them maliciously more power. Me, I'm a mutt of Kraut Pollok Check and ruskie ancestory and I don't really give a crap if you use any of them as I'm an American and thats it. I'm sure other countries have deragatory words for Americans too, but I don't really care. The only words that REALLY tick me off are CARB, EPA, exhaust restriction, CAFE, and Value Engineering.

Seems like many people on this board do not respect others as that JDM-style was asking for a simple request. Are any of you Japanese oriented? What matters is how he feels about it, and he stated clearly that the word that he doesnt like to be referred as is HIS ETHNICITY. I do agree that being called a J** is the same as an African-American being called the "N" word. Thats pretty sad and really makes this board look bad.

what is so hard about this. Stop using JAP and that is the end. Obviously Andy is offended and I can assure you that I am offended as well (i am qtr japanese). I don't care whether you say it without the derrogotory meaning or not. If one is offended then that is nuff reason to quit using it.
I'd love to see someone call me a chink or gook cuz i will knock out teeth outta their freakin mouth like a tiger fist :D
Flip, Jap, Nigga, Chink and many more abbreviations are derragotory and it also depends on ones perception. In Andy's case, he does not appreciated it.

Some of you guys really are immature and have no respect. It shouldn't matter if YOU find it offensive or not, someone else truly does. When it comes to race issues, some people will be start spouting off at the mouth about how it's everyone who has to get over it. But I bet that if the offending issue wasn't about race, like if someone said stop calling my Johnny, my name is John, everyone would just use the name John. It takes the same amount of effort to show the requesting person respect. But because the issue was race related, we see the true mindset of some. They really have no respect for other races deep down inside, but don't even really realize it.

I think part of the problem is that some people assign the same weight to text as to spoken language. Many people type far differently than they speak and would never mean to be offensive they just choose (perhaps poorly) to use that abbreviation.
Also, I have been torn on this for a long time. I dont care what people say about anyone if THE CONTEXT is correct (I do get upset about slurs too, I'm not saying I dont, but usually it's an emotional response, not analytical). I think this is an art form that MANY people have lost. The ability to tell the CONTEXT in which a comment was made is much more important than the actual comment. There are those that use comments to offend, and those that do not. If you can't tell the difference maybe you should learn that before you cry foul.
What do words mean in and of themselves if we dont assign meaning to them. That meaning is defined by context. Claims that words are universally offensive attempts to remove the context under which those words are used. But my removing the context the meaning of the word is lost. The same holds true for Cuss words. If you limit the word in the abstract (out of context) then other words will just replace it to fulfill that meaning in context. It's kinda like when Leia in Star Wars said "The tighter you squeeze the more planets slip through your fingers". You get it...
Anyway, it might be a better idea to recognize the words and there meanings IN CONTEXT. This helps to understand the construction of the words and why people use them. It is better to examine why the words are used and try to stop the reasons instead of just jettisoning a word.
Just my nickles worth.

The problem with this is whose opinion do we respect? Some Jews like the term Jew, some don't.
If we continue to ignore context we will just split the sides (the offended and the guilty/not guilty offender). Sometimes the offended is the one at fault because they refuse to try to understand where the comment came from or why.

I know what you're saying about context. And I do let my friends use many more words than I would strangers because I know them. There is a trust established already. When people I don't know say certain things, I hear only the negative connotations. But because I know the context and give them the benefit of the doubt, I usually let it go. But the words do bring up the negative connotations in my head every time. I do remember being called those names and being picked on when growing up. And I heard them in kindergarten, primary school, jr high, highschool, and college. Some people think that it doens't happen anymore so everyone should just forget the past and get over it. But it doesn't work that way. Just when you start to forget, it does really happen again and serves as another reminder that certain words are used the same way they were decades ago. Some people have never and will never be part of the racial minority and will never (fortunately) experience it. I honestly don't think people will have "gotten over it" until we have a generation that grows up without hearing these words used as slurs. Then and only then will the words lose their negative connotation.
I admit (and my wife will tell you) that I am far from the most PC person. But because I have experienced racial attacks, I do make an effort to respect people's requests when it comes to things like this. Sometimes I say things because I don't know any better, but if it really bothers someone, all it takes is a simple request and I stop 'cause now I know. If I kept doing it, then I'm being a **** now since I know how it makes the person feel. The original poster has just made a simple request. It's far easier to tell someone else to get over something that they themself never had to go through and try to forget.
To me, it's still about showing some respect. What if you had a roommate that would cut his toe nails in front of you and it grossed you out. Add you asked them to not do it in front of you and they just pretty much said to FO and get over it. Anyway you look at it, it's just not cool to do something so simple as to not use words/phrases that truly offends someone.

Take this however you want but you guys really DO need to just get over this. I don't care what race or nationality you are, theres always someone with a term for you that some people of your race or nationality will find deragatory. And maybe it IS deragatory. But if you let bull**** like that get to you you are going to go through your life feeling sorry for yourself and whining about being a dis-respected repressed minority. And the worst thing is its not like these are Japanese people whining, its Americans who are apparently forgetting where they live because they are too busy being over-sensitive about where they are from. Fuggin get over it guys. You live in America? You a Citizen
? Congrats - you an American now STFD and STFU. And if your Japanese, well thats what you get for coming from a country whose name easily shortens into something usable. You don't hear the Finns, Brits, or Scotts complaining do you? It is a shortened version of Japan/ese and that just plain doesn't count as an insult - I mean are you ASHAMED that you come from Japan??? If so why - I love the place - it rocks and I hope to go back again soon. If you want to get pissed about chink and Gook and slant eyed skinny little bastard - I'm right there with ya - those terms suck and are obviosly deragatory. But Jap just isn't. And If that offends you then grow a tougher skin or you aren't gonna cut it in this world. I mean - if ANYONE has a right to be offended by nicknames its guys named Richard - I mean - Di.ck doesnt sound or look anything LIKE Richard. And then there are the "Well you are what you eat jokes"... poor little Richards. :chuckles:
Remember folks - it IS important to be discriminating - hate people for being the worthless individuals that they are not because of their skin color or nationality - thats just lame.

I think that is a greater violation of our personal and civil liberties than anything. I don't think being hatefull should go unpunished either but there is a very fine line you cross in limiting teh speech of others... it just takes away too much of the freedom that this country was founded on and to protect. If you don't like freedom (with its prices such as having to tolerate the ignorant moronics of others) you should probably leave....

Dude - skin color has nothng to do with it. Just because your asian does that make YOU the same as every Chinese, Korean, Tiawanese, vietnamese and cambodian person? Well thats what your saying about all folks of 30 or 40 euro or northern asian (ie russian) desent. You call me "white" like that has anythign to do with my heritage or nationality... WHO is not seeing teh big picture here? News flash - it ain't me.
*I* HAVE been to other countries (Japan for one) I know exactly how it feels to be the ONLY white guy looking down (literally) on hundreds and thousands of Japanese people - plus I live in Carson right by Compton, I'm one of like 3 white families in a 500 family neighborhood so you can just shut your face about what I know and don't know. People will ALWAYS find something to discriminate against you about - be it that your male, felmale, short, tall, smart, dumb, white, black, asian, indian, fat, skinny, sweaty, bald, bushy haired, etc. I mean hell - discrimination my ass - I had to work TWICE as hard to get scholarships for colledge because "I'm not a minority - just another caucasian" - Hopw many ****ing countries are you allowed to group into caucasian anyhow? Your and individual because your from Japan but I'm a facless minority because my skin is like 1 /100th a shade lighter than yours? Hell- I was the only guy in many of my classes with any Polish blood, but hey "I'm just white" **** you and the horse you rode in on. Go sell self pity someplace else - were all stocked up here. I gauran-damn-tee you that I heard MORE than my fair share of racial slurs against Polish people growing up but I just don't care about them because I am NOT Polish I am an American and if being proud of that offends you too frggin bad. I'm also part german and ya know what - there were some derogatory terms about them during WW2 as well- both they and teh polish were ill treated and discriminated against - to say nothing of the fact that I'm part Russian and THEY got tons of hating and discrimination during the 70s and 80s, the difference is my parents and grandparents Got over it and went on with their lives and embraced the culture they came to this continent to live with. I work with a ton of Americans that are of Asian, African, Mexican, and Chinese decent, and none of them seem to feel too sorry for themselves - especially the VPs and high level managers.
Oh well whatever - go back to your self pity - like I said - I respect your wishes and I don't use JAP anyhow (except in the context that GTS LAID used) but whatever - go back to your attitude and feeling sorry for yourself if you want. But its that attitude thats holding you back man. I'm not trying to insult you I'm trying to help you see that a LOT of how hurtful discrimination is is all in the attitude of the recipient. Your life will be a lot happier if you learn to work past it /shrug
BTW - discrimination against an enemy during a war especially when THEY attacked YOU is pretty friggin normal. Love your enemy doesn't work too well as a philosophy for war. I refuse to feel bad about or appologize for those actions - Japan earned what they got when they Bombed Pearl Harbor. But its OVER - the folks that fought in that war are 99% dead now and we are in a friendly and mutually beneficial relationship with Japan. I have nothing but love and respect for the Japanese people and I feel no animosity or malice towards them. They are just people like everyone else.
NOW GET OVER IT!!!

so I do not believe you have a right to say anything about telling us to get over it, cuz its just a reality, and it really doesnt bother me, its people like you that get me, u have no understanding or where we are coming from, so you plz just end your posts.
Dude I'm Asian and have been a victim of racism but I think what you said is the most retarded thing on the planet. Everyone has been a victim of predjudism, even whitey.
I am sorry for what your grandfather was out through but here is is a tip. Get over it. Should I cry about how the Chinese were abused when building the railroads?

It's the principle here man. Quit asking for special treatment. You are not a beautiful butterfly. You are part of the same rotting compost we are.
Look at the context of the message. Is Jap being used in a derrogtory manner? And even if it is, get over it. It's just a forum after all.

I started out thinking that such a simple request was made by a fellow forum member, and people not only couldn't comply, but then started attacking. I honestly wasn't bothered by the term Jap, but I that it was something that should stop because someone was bothered enough by it to ask people to stop. Some of the people here are so typical with they're responses. I can tell they would have responded the same whether the discussion was about the Jap or ****** ("Just get over it...you all call each other that all the time..."). Just keep a mental note on who really thinks what deep inside. They are not your friends.
Like I also said before, if their friend John said stop calling me Johnny because he really hates that name. Or maybe some pervert butt ****ed him while calling him Johnny, some those guys would be like "get the **** over it....... Johnny".
