Would this be a problem with my belt tensioner? It started off quite enough about a month ago and now it is freaking loud. When I initially brought the car to Toyota they told me they could not find any problem. If this is indeed the belt tensioner, can I tell them that I know this is what is making the screeching noise and ask them to replace the part? I just dont want them giving me some song and dance about just needing to lube the part. Any insight would be helpful. :)

does it sound kind of like crickets having sex in ur engine?
is it louder when your car is cold? i had the same problem.. it was the belt tensioner and belt. they replaced both under warranty.

The noise is to remind you that you own a Toyota. Dealer wouldn't do anything for me, don't know about yours.

i have a screeching noise located behind my glovebox. i have had the noise since the first month of owning the car. i have taken it to the dealer 3 times and they had no clue, and today i took it in and drove a mechanic around to prove the noise existed. he told me he found the problem and its the idle pulley. whatever that is.... so in a couple of days the part will be in and i will let you all know if it helped.

It's the belt tensioner. I'm getting it too. Mine is dependent on the weather and how warm the engine is. Haven't been able to get it to the dealer when everything is just right for it to occur.

The belt tensioners on the 2000/2001 model Celicas are totally defective. I've already had mine replaced once. Six months later, the squeak is back, louder than ever.
This time, my dealer says that there are new versions of the tensioner and belts from Toyota (probably for the 2002 model?)
They're supposed to arrive tomorrow, and I'm having them installed in my car. Hopefully that will kill the squeal for good.

The tensioners are not defective, they just need a little more tension in them.. Any kind of build up on the drive belt will make it squeek like crazy.... Road dirt, and other stuff like engine cleaners and such......
