Well the other day I misshifted from 6th to 2nd, but I caught it. The rpms revved up really fast and past the redline. I pushed the clutch back in and everything was fine. I turned the car off and when I turned it back on it was making a clicking, tapping or fluttering sound, something like that. I not a car guy, but my friend(who is) said it could be a valve or piston. Now before that happened the car was making the same noise just not loud and now it is louder, noticebly. When I rev the engine or accelerate the noise gets faster.

I took it to the dealer and they told me it was the belt tensioner. They fixed it and I picked it up. When I started the car it was making the same noise. I called the mechanic over to look at it. He told me that "nothing was wrong. The celica has a noisy engine and if they replace the engine it could be louder than that. Also it's a high revving engine and there is gonna be valve ware. Also that if the CEL is not on they not gonna go into the engine.

Now the car drives fine. I feel no lose of power at all. The only thing is the clicking noise. Its annoying and kinda embarrising coming from a new car. It's not crazy loud, I cant here it when the radio is on or the windows are up, but if I turn the radio down I can kinda here it while cruising.

Now what should I do
1. Take it back and demand to get rid of the noise
2. Deal with it cause other than the noise the car is fine
3. Take it to another dealer.

It could be fine or something could be wrong. I just want the noise to go away.
Sorry for being long. Thanks for any comments.

im having the same problem, with the clicking sound. my dealer thinks it might be the oil is to thin, because i used german 0-30w. so there going to try a oil change to see if that helps.

well, you could just be hearing valve overlap....you're just more paranoid now that you mis-shifted....my celica always had a very fine taping sound, which wasn't anything. if you damaged a valve or a piston, you'd surely get a CEL.

Hate to give you bad news, but when I first got the car I did similar but was in third going to 4th, anyhow you bent a valve possibly more than one. Take it to the dealer they will fix for free but probably will scold you about it. Play dumb I forgot to say I diddn't get a CEL till about a week after it happened but this is what the problem was.

buy a 4 dollar compression tester..Check the compression..If you have a bent valve you'll get like 50psi.

Thanks for the advise, Any more

Maybe I should do nothing, cause everything about the car is fine, its just a little more noisy. I'm just mostly worried what other people think when they here the car. If they can here it.

GTS LAID - Believe it or not its possible to go from 6th to 2nd. I was going into fourth, but pulled it over too fast

Rid-

I had the dealer checking on the belt tensioner for a squeal that had developed but they found "excessive valve train noise" was the real problem. The engine didn't sound as bad as what you are describing and the performance never changed. The dealer had the car for 2 weeks and has decided to replace the engine. I performed a similar "mis-shift" from 6-2 when I had the car originally, though it was intentional, going from 75mph into a 90 degree turn onto a freeway onramp. It reved up to about 6k but I caught it. That was about the only forcing of the engine I did past 4k for the life of the engine. The dealer didn't hastle me about it, (I played dumb) and is replacing it under warranty with no questions asked. I believe the new engine is going to have the 7800rpm cutoff, which is probably a good thing given the circumstances.

After the dealer checked out the engine the CEL turned on. The dealer said there was no problem driving the car normally after that. They are replacing the engine on mine with symptoms that are not nearly what you describe so I'd suggest going to another dealer to have it checked out. Expect a wait though, my car has been parked at the dealer for 2 weeks, 1-1/2 weeks for diagnosis and another week for the engine to arrive... and I'm still waiting for them to install the new one.

BTW, a bright red Dodge Neon is not a replacement for the Celi.
