I was wondering if anyone had the problem of paint chipping or fading. I heard that liquid silver was the quickest to fade. My dad had a 70 cuda and it was silvefr he said it faded and chipped away pretty quick. Just wanna know if the technology has changed, and if the liquid silver paint was any good. Any responses are much appreciated!!:D

Paint tech has improved greatly. The guy at a paintless repair shop said he believed toyota had some of the best paint. He also noted they also had some of the thinnest sheet metal, for what its worth.

seems like the dark colors show the chips the worst.........they all chip the same, but on a black/blue celi you notice the white spots more than on the silver.

mine is almost a year old and the front end still looks like it came off the dealer lot. I dont understand what all the noise is about it coming off. Under normal driving conditions, it holds up fine just like any other paint job. Some people here seem to be driving behind gravel trucks all day and then complain about it coming off?
IMO the only time you have a paint problem from the factory is if it starts bubbling up and chipping off BY ITSELF. Stuff hitting it is definately gonna cause damage, how can you blame the carmaker for that? OTher than that I think its fine.

I have had some serious problems with the paint in just a year. Tons of chips, scratches and swirl marks. I took it in to the dealer and told them about it. Apparently with the paint, there are no separate layers for the colour coat and the clear coat. It is all in one. therefore, there is just one layer to chip through when a stone hits it, and the chips appear more regularily than cars with a few layers of clear coats over the colour coats.
As a result, Toyota is going to pay for the front end of the car to get repainted - the dealership is really cool and is going to swing some crazy sh!t to make it happen.

Toyota painted my hood about 4 months ago under warranty. Have not had a problem since. I had tons of chips on my hood and only had around 15,000 miles on my car.

I've noticed that lately Toyota's paint quality has been getting worse. The white paint on my 86 MR2 is pretty impressive and about the same quality (chipping and fading) as my friend's white 91 MR2. However, we noticed that the paint on my friend's silver and another friend's red 2000 Celica were chipping a lot more and didn't seem as thick. We noticed the same thing on a 2001 Echo and 2000 Corolla. I think the sheet metal has also gotten lighter. My MR2 hood weighs a lot more than a 2000 Celica hood despite being a lot shorter. Just observations.

i think cuz they outlawed lead? iono what time this was exactly, but recently they've been trying new stuff with paint.... dont think they have it down..... or maybe its just good ol' fashioned cost cutting.... i've had no problems with my paint... i drive local tho.... no rocky country roads, etc.

I believe those bans were in effect in the early 90s. I just think it's because Toyota is cutting corners. My Teg has a pretty nice paint job. My mom's 2000 CLK has a wonderful paint job.

The '01 Celica I used to drive had almost as many chips in the paint as my Supra. That's pretty telling right there :(

Toyota paint job sux. I don't see how Tyran said Paint Tech has gotten better. It has gotten worse due to thinner paint and less harmful material used in the process. Just think about leaded gasoline, it was better for the car performance but it harmed the environment. Technology makes gasoline burns cleaner but it also makes your car go slower.

Oh come on....they had to stop using lead because the barn yard animals might eat it off your car, hehehe. (or maybe that was barn paint) My inproved tech responce was mostly prompted by improved automation techniques, clean rooms, etc. I didn't know that the Celica was a "one coat" type paint, that sux (are you sure!?). My Mazda pickup was that way and eveytime I waxed it I had red paint all over my buffer.
Over all, I know Chysler has had a lot of problems with paint, sorry thats obvious, hehe... I have to admit I have a lot of rock chips and my mom's RS 300 has a lot as well. You could get that clear protective stuff put on there for $500+ bucks, I know, I thought that was crazy to. My parents were going to drive to Dallas to get it anyway.
There are always truckers and pickup trucks dropping crap out on the highways around here. I got nailed 2 days in a row by rocks falling out of peoples trucks.

Thanks, but what I really wanna know is if the paint fades easily. I will keep it up, but I heard the silver color fades the quickest. Whats your response to that?

this isnt no chevy LOL no the paint is better now so you dont have to worry about fading like a few years ago. Toyotas paint has always been one of the better ones out. I still stay away from red silver and black after 5 years of detailing when I was younger. imho you should be fine I'd still keep a good coat of wax on her and a little tlc and you'll have no problems. my 94 4\4 toy [green] still looks dam sharp but like the guys said the new celis paint in not the same.
