Last night, 50% of the time, the second cam on my Celica did not kick in after 6K. Sometimes it kicked in at 6K, other times it kicked in at 7K or 7.5K, and sometimes it was not there at all.
What is the problem? Is it serious? Does it mean the Celica is goin back to the dealer?

Hmmm.. Check your mass air flow sensor. Also check your intake box, and filter. thats all I can think of. Take it to the dealership if it keps acting up.

not meaning to treat u like an idiot, but a few basic questions:
1.was the engine warm?
2.when the 2nd cam didnt kick, did u hit somewhat of a rev limiter or would it go all the way to 7800?

check your oil filter and make sure it is the taller one not the shorter one, the shorter one will cause a lack of pressure which will affect the cams sometimes!

did you know that in order for the 2nd cam to come on you must have the accelerator all the way down? WOT

uh...the 2nd cam will come on regardless of throttle position. you just won't feel it "kick in" unless you're at WOT before switchover.

I'm pretty sure it's doesn't work perfectly if you aren't at WOT
I know something won't work right.... not sure what.. maybe it's that fuel cut off will be at 7xxx rpms or something

On my car, the 2nd cam engages, and it revs to 8,300RPM even if I don't have it at WOT. Why don't you test it out.
Anyway, the problem is probably oil pressure related. DId you check your oil level lately?
