High Speeds?

Any Idea why my 2000 celica gt with many mods can only reach 120 mph. It gets to 110 pretty quickly and then creaps very slowly to 120 and then no more. Is there a governor? Or is it just the gt?

you have a TRD kit and an APR wing which i can only guess adds a ton of drag to your car. Thats probably decreasing your top speed. I also hope you have hoodpins on that car, because its not too safe to be running those speeds with a CF hood and no hoodpins. Why go 120 anyways, its not really worth the risk. What if you hit a slight bump and air rushes underneath your car. Did you also know that braking distances are not linear, meaning it does not take you twice the distance to brake twice the speed. Its actually squared.

What this means is lets say a GT can go 60-0 in 125 feet. Lets also take into account that these are strict track conditions, so on the street maybe its more like 135 feet. You were going 120, in order for you to stop, it would take you 135 * 2^2 = 135 * 4 which is 540 feet. I hope you know how much distance to leave now. Please be careful when you do this sheit. People will say dont do it, but people will do it anyways. If you are going to do it, at least be smart about it and read up a little so that you dont end up making a fatal mistake.

sorry bro, just tryin to keep you aware of what goes on at high speeds. anyways, get rid of the wing, that would probably help the most. I just hope you have hoodpins if you are planning to go like 140. If you wanted to go all out, you could probably put your side mirrors in. Run at night when its colder. get really skinny tires. If you wanna go faster then that, you are either going to need a new transmission that will allow the car to run faster than 144. It hits full cutoff at about 144. Or you could get larger diameter tires. You will need more power to get to speeds that high though. Probably through a turbo or supercharger, which i dont know of any that are readily available

Take off the big wing and the body kit and your car willl be faster (some would say it will look better too).

You don't say one way or the other, but do you have an automatic too?

Also, why on earth do you need to go that fast? Something left to prove to the world?

Dump some weight (as much as you can) - easy victims are all the seats, the spare tire, jack etc.

Run your car at like 1/4 tank

Loose the kit & wing

yank your air filter

remove your mirrors

put some bigger OD wheels and tires on (as light as you can get em) and pump em up

Without getting into engine mods that will get you as fast as you are likely to go. Downhill on a cold day wouldn't hurt either.

However - a very serious safety warning - do NOT exceed the speed rating on your tires and make sure they are in perfect condition and your alignment is dead on. Any pull, wander, or tire problems at that speed are going to become very serious.

I'm not going to pretend I don't understand why you want to go fast, believe me I do and I have done it myself, but please dude, be VERY safe about this if your going to try it and remember - if teh police catch you they CAN take you to jail, seize your car, and yank your liscence. Doubling the speed limit is a a criminal offense in most areas and it endagers you and others unless you are very carefull. Find a VERY long, very straight, and VERY deserted road, wear your safety belt, and a helmet if you have one.

so going 140 on the NJ turnpike probably wasnt a good idea...lol


actually my alignment is dead on, my tire pressure is checked every time i get into the car, and my S03s are Z rated to more than the car can go.

only problem.... freaking road imperfections. With the TEIN suspension you feel every single one and of course since you're going double the speed, the energy associated with the impact with each bump is 4x the amount.

And spare me the guilt trip, there was no one on the road and no one in the car. I know the consequences of my actions and can live with them as long as they dont involve other human beings... and they didnt.

He he what guilt trip - just tellign him to be safe :) - I've done my share of stupid stuff and I love going fast, but if I'm going to do anything stupid and fast these days I make sure I'm only putting myself at risk... Only reason I havent been 140 in the NJ Turnpike is cause, well, I don't live anywhere near NJ :)

Speed is def fun, but remember, no matter how good of a drive you might be, accidend WILL happen...I'm not trying to pull out the guilt trip or anything, b/c i was doin 120 w/ no hood pins...That was when i decided that i'd stop goin fast, at least until i bought some hood pins :)
That damn hood was one of the scariest looking thing i've seen happen at high speeds.
oh yes, and your car should do at least 130-135, from the factory.

The reason I was going that fast was because I did a thing called the East Coast Run / Cannonball Run. It was a race from Long Island New York to Fort Lauderdale Florida. During the race my car only could get up to 120 (which was damn fast) and I dont plan on doing it anytime soon again but It just kinda bothers me that eventhough Im not gonna drive that fast again for a while The power isnt there. For anyone that wants to know, I did get second place in the race though we made it in 16:26 to Ft. Lauderdale. We actually made it to the florida line in 12 hours. No tickets and WHAT AN ADRENALINE RUSH!!!

that is such a pounding on your engine, lol. Its not just your power, its definitely the wing. Lightening the car up will get you there quicker, but it wont raise your speed at all

turn overdrive off and run your car into the rev limiter. sounds like it's shifting into 4th (overdrive) at 110mph and won't pull anymore.

that's if you have an auto. if you have a manual GT, avoid shifting to 5th until after you hit the rev limiter. i dont' think 5th will pull.

Damn man that is insane!!!:AF: I don't mean that in a parental way either. I would love to do that, but sheit, that is a long way to be going all out and be wondering if a cop is around the next turn. I have done my share of speeding, but nothing that comes even close to that. Thats just straight bustin nuts for days and then to be racing too!!!!

I did mine at 144am with my friend in the car going down the Sunol Grade on 680 in Fremont California. Everyone says that they get scared at those speeds cz they are unsure of what the car might do, but I don't feel that way cz the car is so solid. I was only scared of running up on the Highway Patrol......Now that sh!t is scary.......I think if he were parked I would just keep on going to the next exit.......if he were movin just slow down and pull to the side or ...........Ahhhhhhhh don't even want to think about it too much......give me the chills......my dad would....... don't want to think of that either!
