what is it..... i dont yet own a celica and i keep hearing everyone refer to hitting left when they shift blah blah blah, i realize the engine is vvtl-i for gts but what does lift mean>? and why does the gts engine get an "I" ? intellegence means?

*rubs hands together* wow im the first to respond to a post for once =D i get to feel smart and teach him something.

ok, first of all, the Gt model has a VVTI engine, which does not contain lift. the GTS of course has lift, and has a VVTLI engine. the GTS model gets its extra 40 hp from 'lift' which kicks in around 6k RPM. 'lift' is when the 2nd cam is activated and produces more hp, therefore throwing you back in your seat and giving dramatic increase in acceleration. you could think of it as a small turbo sort of... :P

oh ya vvtli stands for variable valve timing lift... and vvti is just variable valve timing.. forgot what the i is for haha

the actual word refers to the fact that the valves sink a bit deeper into the cylinder allowing more fuel (and therefore more air) and making more power. if you're interested there are a couple of articles that are very specific. Heres one that compares the VVT (GT) engine to the VVTL engine (GTS):
