I am getting a 17x8 wheel, I think the correct tire size for that would be either 225/40/17 or 215/45/17...? there's not much selection in the 225/40/17 size and I'm scared of scratching the lip with the 215/45/17 size (should I be?). So I started looking at 225/45/17 and 235/40/17 and there's lots of choices in those sizes...which one should I get? or more specifically which one would offer the most contact patch?

You might want to ask this in the Wheel & Tire Forum instead.

However, in my opinion, don't go over a 225mm width, or you will have fenderwell rubbing. Of course, I hope you made sure the wheels will fit properly, with the correct offset.

Please note that most real autocrossers would not use such a large wheel as 17x8 on the Celica. I assume they are just for show and you don't really want to improve your car's handling. Unless they are Volks, the wheels will be way too heavy. Enjoy.

35mm offset should be enough I hope. they actually weigh in at 19lbs, a tad bit over stock, but I haven't got $2000 for some advans. and no not for autocross but rather time trials. the stocks are for the "smaller" events.

Those are actually pretty light for 17x8.

For a good tire size checker, go to http://www.secret-secret.com/turbo/DIY/tirecalc/turbotire.html . It will help you compare the overall diameters for different tire sizes. 225/40-17 is a close match, but might be rare as you mentioned.
