View Full Version : Where Can I Mount A Video Camera In The Car?

I remember back in the day, a few people made some long videos from inside their car. Not sure if they just had a passenger take the video or if they actually mounted the camera to the interior somehow.

There are a few cool twisty backroads around here, and I wanna take some videos on them. It would also be cool if I was following some other Celi's at a meet.

I'm either gonna hook up this dinky little spy camera I have to my VCR (powered by an inverter) or hook up my digicam to the VCR (better night time visibility). Then I'd just transfer the video from the VCR to my computer with this USB video transfer thingie I have.

I'm leaning more towards the digicam because I can attach a wide angle lens to improve the view (maybe I can get the gauges in, too! :) ), and I could just record to the camera instead of bringing along a VCR.

How would you suggest I go about mounting the cameras to the interior? The digicam has the standard tripod threads on the bottom (and I have a tripod), and the spy cam has an adhesive bottom (but it's too low to just stick on the dash).

a while back i saw this bar stabilzer thingie that used the hanger hooks in the rear window, you could prolly add another bar to stabaliz it on the center console, you could mount it on that

The only problem with putting it on the dash is that the windshield is angled so far back, at the height the camera needs to be to clear the windshield wipers, it would pretty much need to be near the roof and rearview mirror.

I'm thinking maybe I could make a mount with suction cups attached to the top, and hang it from the inside of the moonroof.

I'm also wondering if a cop could pull me over for it. I won't have the camera up there for too long, but there's always a chance...

not the rear view mirror, the quarter windows in the back, where there are hooks, get a pole hanging in between them and another on to stabilize it on the center console, mount the camera on that

I have the Hama suction cup mount at the bottom. It works nicely. I mount it on the windshield, though I think it will work on the side glass or the sunroof as well.

Never fallen off during a competition run (autocross).

Yeah, my buddy has that same mount in his ride and the thing is great. He also uses it to autox with and it's never come out.

It does get in the way of your passenger though.....

how big of a camera can this take? autox how big is yours? I have an old canon optura dv and it's not that big but it's pretty heavy for a dv cam, some info on it can be found here http://www.canondv.com/optura/index2.html I would love to have one of these to tape my auto-xs

I did that before, with a Mini DV Sony PC-5.

I used an expensive tripod borrowed from my friend, and tied it on the back seat, also tied it with strings inside the car. Worked well with Wide angle lens.

That's almost exactly what I was thinking of, autxr. The price is kinda steep, though. I'll see what I can whip up at home. BTW, do you have any of your autox videos uploaded anywhere? I'd love to see some!
