I was just looking through the recent SCC with their Project Matrix and noticed in the pictures and the stats that the Matrix has a 8100 redline. I thought Toyota already had enough of the blown engines in the celica gt-s? They bumped the fuel cutoff of the GT-S down to 7600 in 2002's but they decide to raise the redline of the 2zz in the matrix to 8100. It doesn't really make sense other that using it as an advertising gimmick. Does the matrix use the same six speed in the 2002 celica (same gear ratio's and wider i think)? Lets see how long Toyota produces the matrix with the 8100 redline before they bump the fuel cutoff and redline to 7400 or 7600.;)

yah that's bs :)

the 2001 and 2000 celica's had a 7800 rpms redline!
I want my guages to show a 8100 rpm redline! darn it!

ok i guess toyota just loves giving away new engines:D

And the Matrix gets 17" hoops. This is the reason I would guess for the higher rev limit.....gearing is too high to pull 16s never mind 17s. I would love to try a set of gummy 14s, that would probably keep it on the cam.

The engines they're using on the Matrix were the blown Celica engines that had to be replaced..:D

Yeah, I know what you mean about the 8100rpm. In fact the Euro Celica's have 8200rpm's compared to my 7800rpm. It's just so much nicer to see 8200 redline than 7800.. I'm wondering why the euro has it @8200 and the US @7800.. Any guesses?? Someone told me it was due to the lack of manual drivers in the US compared to Europe. They were afraid we were going to do something stupid so they gave us little more room for mistakes.

The Matrix that SCC has is a pre-production test mule. Durability really doesn't matter on a car that's going to be used basically as a test bed for mods. After all, is SCC going to care if it burns oil at 80 000 miles? Revving to 8100 isn't going to kill your engine right away, its just going to make it less durable, so this particular car got a different tach. I think the production car is going to have the same redline as the GT-S.

As for the gearing, it is exactly the same as the GT-S. As someone mentionned, the larger tires make it even more difficult to catch lift on the 1-2, and SCC did complain about it in their article.

also just cuz it says 8100 doesnt mean it runs to 8100.. the 02 GTS says 7800 and shuts at 7700..
