Q: Anybody follows CART?

A: No, everyone knows that CART champions go on to become mediocre F1 drivers :D

The answer is that no-one really knows and they probably wont tell us for another 10 years if ever. Engine tech for CART and F1 is VERY hush hush. I got to go in the Toyota Cart pts back when they were running the American Eagle Chassis and they had to cover the motor completely before they would let me anywhere near the car (which is super sweet BTW - friggin 8 piston calipers on the brakes and carbon fiber everything.)

Da Matta is the CART god! :D

also if anyone follows WRC then saw Gronholm win the championchip in new zealand, good stuff! :D

I follow CART since they race a few miles from where I live every year. Newman Haa's Racing's Christiano Da Matta one Miami and also clinched the manufacturer's title finally for Toyota. Kinda sucks I have to go to an IRL race to see a Toyota engine next year. This year the Toyotas are using the V8 RV8F engine. Just hearing those bad boys start up just gives you goose bumps. At least in CART unlike in F1 you can go to the paddock and see the cars and engines up close and take pictures. As for Mediocre drivers. Villeneuve won the F1 title when he moved from CART to Formula 1 and Montoya is on one of the top teams, Williams-BMW right now, well 2nd tier teams since Ferrari was was on a level on its own this year.

I'm planning to go to the CART race in Fontana, CA at the end of the month so I'll be posting pics from the race.

What's amazing is seeing them run 210+ on a superspeedway. Its just mindblowing just even thinking of driving that fast for 500 miles.

i watched fontana 2 years ago when it got red flagged due to the rain. it sucked having to ditch school to watch the restart, but it was totally cool watching cars go by at 230 mph.

Yea I was there too for that race. Had to persuade my manager to let me go since I went with 2 other co-workers. So i drove back to Fontana then went right to work after the race. At least we were able to sit in better seats the following Monday.

Don't forget, apparently Da Matta has signed with Toyota for his F1 debut next year. CART is not doing well overall as I've heard. Lot of people switching to IRL instead. Villeneuve would have had a much tougher time in 97 if it wasn't for Michael's leg being broken in an accident that year. But I like Villeneuve, he's been linked to a CART/IRL drive for next year. BAR is trying to get rid of him because his salary is cutting into their budget. He is one of the highest paid drivers in the world. I think he makes 12 million a year now.

You don't see much driving in WRC though. I want to hear the driver, navigator, car, ect... not the announcers talking.

Either way, I like CART's product, as they make two stops in the NW every year. I'm glad that they're sticking with the turbo V8s, as they had originally planned to use a similar formula (3.5 liter NA "farting bee" engine and ugly chassis) of that of the IRL. I heard rumors about gasoline 3 liter V10s (hmmm, F1?) being the formula for 2005. Then I bet you Toyota and Honda will be back.

I hope da Matta suceeds in F1, if the rumors are true and Toyota announces his signing in Japan.

I use to follow CART back when Zanardi was putting the smackdown on everyone. After Montoya left so did my interest for the series. The quality of drivers has plummeted since the departing of Team Penske and Montoya. I remember 2 yrs ago when De Matta's driving skill only netted a top ten position. Now his kicking ass.

Now, I just follow SVWC Touring and GT series. Its way slower but 10X more entertaining to watch.

You should see them hit 195 on a straight at Road America, then brake for a 60 mph left hander.

What is even more amazing is that the lap record at Road America had stood at 132 mph (average) since 1973. It was finally broken in 1993 by Paul Tracy. Mark Donohue held it in a Porche 917-30 Can Am car. This car was hitting 220 on the straights at Road America. Considering the tire, suspension, and braking technology of the day. These cars ran an "unlimited" formula, and these cars has a turbo flat 12 producing 1200bhp.

But when you think about how he accomplished netting a top ten finish in the then-underpowered, unreliable Toyota (which was waay behind the Honda, Ford, and Mercedes engines until last year) with a second tier team like Arciero-Blair/PPI, then you'd think he's not too shabby, right? Shoot, even Montoya was mid-pack with Toyota power!

remember when ganassi switched to toyota and everyone started knocking on how toyota were behind the others. people at the races would say, "remember that ganassi won with the honda." but ganassi did the same thing with honda back in the day.

Its going to be interesting for CART in 03 its going to be make it or break it. Rumor has it that CART is looking to align themselves with F1.

BTW here is a pic of me @ the Long Beach Grand Prix a couple of years ago.

Believe it or not,
my company has been coating racing engine parts with diamond coatings to improve wear durability and heat dissapation for the last few years. We have had a few CART teams (which I cannot mention) come to us for specialized coatings. It's kinda cool to be in a conference call with mr. XXXXX's chief engine build engineer, especially when you see the car that your parts are in is racing the following sunday on TV.

Just an FYI

Michael didn't brake his leg in '97. That was '98 or '99. Villeneuve beat him fair and square for the Championship. And Vileneuve will be in F1 next year.... he won't leave.....

I stand corrected, Michael broke his leg in 1999 and Salo had to fill his shoes.

I was thinking of the raing incident between Villeneuve and Michael where Michael tried to force Villeneuve off the track and ended up crashing out and this in turn won Villeneuve the championship. He did win fair and square but his biggest mistake was not staying where he was in that team, I think he would have given Michael more runs for his money.
