19" wheels are bad for performance no matter what the rest of the car is set up like. With a turbo you'll probably run in to worse traction and wheelhop problems because of the total lack of sidewall.

i don't think 19 foot wheels will fit on your car.

smart ass... :fawk:
anyway you increase your rotational inertia by enourmous amounts over a 16" wheel... for example if a 19" wheel wheighed proportionally more than a 16" wheel you'd have 67.4% more rotational intertia.. thats a sh1tload more and you might as well not get the turbo and stick with 16" wheels

Well if you want both show and go, you can justify having 19" wheels if you have enough power to back it up. It would'nt be considered all rice...
But for the Celica, I would'nt go over 18"... Personally I'll stick with lightweight 17's.

Guys what are your lightest wheels of choice in the US? Over here in the UK it's OZ Superleggeras, but what do you guys go for?

Hey, I have 19's and they're not that bad as far as slowing the car down. You notice it most taking off from rest, but with a turbo I wouldn't think it's that big of a deal. People complain about the weight, but really they have so much less rubber that the weight doesn't increase as much as you might think. Also, it's more realistic to compare the weight of 19's against the 17's or 18's you're thinking about swapping to. In that scenerio the weight differencial becomes even less. So, I guess it depends on what's important to you. I will say that 19's are exponentially more jaw-dropping than 17's or even 18's. I think you could also argue that they allow a bit more feedback form the road while driving.

I have 19" for the street and when I go racing I out on different wwheels for traction... a nice set of 15" with drag radials...
cannot beat the look of 19" wheels....
BTW my car is a Matrix 19" look small to me..

OZ are good they are avilible here as well
Racing Heart CP035R are really nice
Volk TE-37 are a nice light wheel...
Axis has one called the Mag-lite kinda ugly -but light
and the roja line has some nice styles that are light

A typical 19" rim weights around 27lbs. The tire weight around 24 lbs. Total is 51-55lb for a typical 19" setup.
Now my lightweight 17" with tires tip the scale at 37 lb.
Just the weight difference between the two is ~15lbs a corner x4 = 60 lbs.
If you factor in the the rotational mass/inertia, etc... That 60lbs can very well translate to the equivalent of over 200lbs of dead weight that will affect your acceleration, braking, traction and handling.
Now for those who thinks 19" rims look better than 17"...
It really depends on the person. Personally I think a 17" set of lightweight forged Volks looks so much better than a set of 19" 3 Piece Bling Bling rims. The Volk says this car is all business, same effect u get when u see a set of wide ass slicks on a RWD car.

You are wrong about that...
A bigger/low profile tire actually weights more than a bigger looking tire with more rubber.
The reason being is that low profile tire has very thin sidewall and so it has to be stiffer. Doing so, they need to add more metal reinforcements, etc and it makes the tire heavier.

if you loose 14 hp going from a 16" wheel to a 18" wheel what do you think you'll loose with the 19" wheel.
celicaruss only got 160 to the wheels on his 18's and when he dynoed before he got 174 i beleive. thats a huge difference...
my 17" wheels and tires are 36 pounds and i dynoed with them and got 174 to the wheel so with 17's and smaller tires(215 40 ZR 17) you wont loose anything going from 16 to 17's. im one of those people that want the look but i dont want to get 18's to always be switching out to the smaller uglier rims.

Are you sure your wheels are only 36lbs??
I have lightweight wheels, Forged Alum Volks and lightweight tires, Toyo T1-S and they tip the scale at 37lbs.
I know its accurate because the scale I used are for letters/postage. They are accurate to the ounce.
I mean I thought the Z5000 17" is around 19lbs + tires. I don't know of any 17lb 17" tires on the market.

yea they are 36 pounds.
the rims actually weigh 17 pounds each. i weighed the stock ones on the same scale and they weighed 18.5 pounds.
stock was 37 or 38 with tires from what i remember.

I weighed the stock 16" rims from the GT-S with 205/50/16 tires, and they came out to 38 lbs. I weighed my 17"x 7" Z5000 rims with 215/45/17 tires (exactly like your rims but with a tire with a slightly higher sidewall) and they weigh about 39-39.5 lbs.

I agree..... but rightnow my car is pretty much stock so I have 19" for now.. when the turbo goes in I'll go 17" lightweight with drag radials or Yokohama A032R.
I must admit the 19" wheels look good but drive like sh*t and spinn all the time... now that it is a little colder out if I mash it in 1st they just spin.

Screw the physics...If u can fit 19's and run 300+ hp on a turbo kit...go ahead...It's not like yur part of a race team looking to win an important race...lets not get too anal about what will affect yur performance...remember if yur not part of a sponsored race team or such...chill out a little...live a lot more
i just got my 18"s .. i regret it very much.. i am a performance person..
car handles like SH!T
OH NO.....I WANT !7s!

The car's not going to "handle like ****" because you have 18's.
Do you mean the car's acceleration sucks?

More likely that the ride is screwed. Depends on rubber profile, 215/35/18's will make you feel like you're driving on rubber bands, but 225/40/18 won't be quite as harsh

I remember when this shop is makin a small cd business card, they have this small clip of the xs turbo celica on 19 axis wheels racing an older porsche Carrera...he beat the porsche.

stick with 17 if u want to balance with performance!

It's not just the weight....it's where the weight is placed. If you go from a 16 inch rims to a 17 inch but the weight is the same And the tire diameter too) you will still put less power to the ground. Why....because the weight is now farther away from the center. Think of it as putting a weight on a stick say about 1 ft away then trying to swing the stick. Now move that same weight to 2 ft down the stick and trying to swing that...it's going to be harder....hmmmmm.
Mebbe a lettle tinkin eh?

He has got an excellent point.....It's not like anyone here is running 10's (that I know of) I have 19" wheels and stomp on plety of other cars all the time.....

compare to the stock.. felt like ****
the acceleration slower of course, but umm the weight on the tire..
when i flooring the car on the high way trying to past cars i feel my steering wheel is feeling weird(lil heavy perhaps) to turn.. because my rims are heavy..
