View Full Version : a Celica GT how slow/fast?

i was planning on getting a celica GTS for the longest but i do not think i can afford it anymore. (i am 18) and i was wondering how slow or fast the GT. The GT has no lift. so the GT revs to like 7000rpm just like the GTS below 6k rpms? if that is so that would be some massively bad torque i would think. i would surely see a difference in the truck i own know if i get a gt. my current truck is 85hp lol. one other thing is the sound of a gt a higher pitch the the GTS or is it about the same. If anybody can help me with these question i would be so happy thanks.

once again.....if you want performance dont get the lowest trim.
And do what we all did when we were 18 - drive a piece of sh*t for the next 4 years, then get a real car :)

If you want performance dont get an automatic either because the GT 5spd beats the auto GT-S in 1/4 mile:)

i would get a standard anyways i think automatic are too depentent on the car instead of the driver and auto's are borning i love my 5spd truck :)

Get a used GT-S if possible. Why get a slow 5 speed GT then always wonder how much better it wou;d have been if you had gotten the 6 speed GT-S?

You can't tell that the GT is slower until you hit over 6k I have had my GT 5spd for over a year and have no complaints, the GT has higher low end torque then the GTS. I have raced a couple of GTS's and I normally will be pulling away until they hit lift but in my opinion it just was not worth the extra insurace and 4000 dollars a few extra horses at the top end. get what you can afford and mod the hell outa it.
One more thought a celica club down here that I am in went to an autocross a few weeks ago and the fastest time by a celica was a GT 5spd with no mods.

well. from my understanding, the lift has been causing some problems in creating a turbo kit for the gts. i'm sure they'll get around this, but for now, west covina's soon going to have a turbo kit (hopefully with no problems) ready for the gt.
there are additional features in the gts that are offered that increases its price. so u may think about that. the engine bay is different in both vehicles. also, the seats in the gt are cloth or leather, whereas the seats in the gts feel more suede-like or leather. then there's the exhaust differences and the rear disc brakes (which isn't really a big improvement on braking but looks a heck of a lot better than drums).
like i said. it's up to you. get a used gts or get a gt. and as you've already mentioned - make sure you get a manual if you plan on doing any racing.

im 17 and cause i have mad hook ups i got my gt for 15k brand new. i love it and although the gt-s will probly kick my a$$ i still wont back down and i'll bet ill beat most of you in the long run. as for speed i hit 140+ in my gt :D .
its not about the car, its all about the driver...

140 in GT? hmmmm.... I've had the pedal to the medal on the highway and it was stuck at 133. Did you take off something?

By the way, the GT is a great car for the price. Don't forget that, the best part about the Celica is its handling and the GT and GTS are equal in this department when it comes down to it. But yes, drive a crappy car for four years (I drove a 92 corolla for 8 years), learn what it is like to own a regular car and live cheap for a while and then get the car you want, trust me, it'll be a much better idea and feeling.

No doubt I would take a 6 spd GT-S over my 5 spd GT, but offer me an auto GT-S and I'll laugh at you and throw the keys in your face:p :D

Buy whichever one you can afford. The GT and GT-S are both great cars for the money. But if you NEED an auto, you might as well save some coin and get the GT.
If you are itching for performance, go with the GT-S. The 30 more horsepower and 6 speed gives it an edge over lots of other cars on the road, and you will be surprising some people for sure.
If you would rather have something better for casual driving, than get the GT. It has more useable torque and it's more fun to drive in the city.

the gt-s has just 10 nm more than the gt, so the price difference is not worth the money. Get a GT, its fast enough, and yes, i hit the 140 mph more than once :)
ok here in switzerland, both models have the 6 speed, but dont mind! get some 17" and you have a great car!

Also, think about insurance. Hell, I could've financed the extra few $$$ to get a GTS, but insurance would've killed me as long as I owned the car. Remember, you can make GT as fast as GTS after you buy it.
So you save some $ at purchase, you spent some $ to make it faster/look better, you pay less $ for insurance each month. Sounds like a plan to me...especially if you're 18.

Well i got a price quote for the GTS from my insurance company(State Farm) and it is only going to be 200 month full coverage. with a 250 deduckable. not as bad as some i heard around this board. also is the drum disk's on GT noticeable. probally not with stock rims but i bet with like new 17" it would be right? Hey can anybody also explain leasing the car. I mean i can lease 23000 from toyota and it is only like around 300/month @ 7.9%apr for 5 years. How much would i have to pay after the 5 years? anybody got a formula or soemthing for leaseing. 1 more question does the trd short-shifter fit the 02-GT cause i heard it doesn't fit the 02 GTS's. Thanks

What is nm?
So i guess us GT-S owners wasted our money, huh.

that means newtonmeters. its the european standart for tq
the gt has 170nm
the gt-s 180 nm
the price difference in switzerland between the gt, n the gts is bout $3500, but its not worth the money, cuz both have exactely the same stock things (exept the motor of course). 16" Alus, klima, 6 Speed, Foglights, keyless door, sony audio system, abs etc etc etc

I would actually have to agree with MarkyMark, if you are performance minded you should just wait untill you have enough money to buy the car you really want. A lot of people here arn't really all that performance minded and they love their GT's, and they should because the GT is a really great car. You might be happy with the GT but do you really want to spend the next 5 or so years making payments on a car that makes you think "this is a nice car, but I wish it were a GTS"?
I really wanted more of a performance car when I was shopping for a new car. I looked at VR4's, WS6 Trans Ams, ect. , and while I could afford the cars I was not willing to pay the insurance. Now I kind of regret settleing for less of a performance vehicle, because now I have moved up an insurance bracket due to my age, which means I could now probably afford the insurance on the cars I wanted.

i think i found a way to pay for the gts, i would have to get rid of the action package and/or get it under a lease. anybody have thiers under a 5/yr lease? and how much do u guys think i would have to pay for a $22205 lease with $305/month @ 7.9% apr at the end of the 5/yr? thanks again

I would definately recommend against leasing. If it is at all possable you should purchase the car instead. I don't know what the total cost of the car will be but if you plan on actually owning this car some day the lease would be a huge(and I stress HUGE) rip off to you. Every dealarship does leases differently so the only way to actually find out the cost will be to talk to your dealer. I do know that when some people who planned on buying their cars at the end of their lease sat down to figure out the total cost of their cars they found out that they were actually paying close to $40,000 for their celica's in the end.
Short term leases are good options for people who always drive a new car every 2 or 3 years anyway and who can comfortably stay within the mile restrictions. Long term leases(like the 5 year one you are considering) are usually never a good option for any one. Buying the car at the end of the lease is never a good option for any one.
The best thing you can do is save all your money for a year and use that as a down payment on a Celica. Or, if you can afford it, purchase one with out the action package. The action package could always be added later on if you really like it.

Purchasing a GT might be the better choice. I cant imagine taking care of a car I do not own. To each his own but I don't like the idea of leasing.
