ok.. serious suggestion from one who has done this himself MANY TIMES

1) if you are planning on doing tihs yerself.. buy the toyota service manuals.. and READ.. and once you think you know.. read it again.. and again, and once again.. then you might be half prepared for the amount of **** your gonna go through :)

2) now my advice.. take it somewhere else and let them do it.. its a NIGHTMARE if anything goes wrong, and it will.. just trust me :)

First off, yes, you do need to remove the clutch to change the flywheel (the pressure plate is bolted directly to the flywheel, and the clutch is sandwiched between the two).

Second, transaxle removal is very serious work. No offense, but if you don't understand how the clutch works, you're likely to screw something up. As for your friend the engineer, I'm a mechanical engineer, and I can honestly say that I wouldn't trust most of my graduating class with something like this. If your friend has done a LOT of hands-on automotive work, that's a different story.

If you do decide to do it yourself, the service manual is an absolute must. Read the instructions and get all of the special service tools they specify, especially the tool to support the engine while the transmission is disconnected. You'll also need a clutch alignment tool - you might be able to get away with a generic clutch alignment tool. Also, get a good torque wrench (one of those ones that "clicks") and make sure its range covers all of the torque specs listed in the manual for this job. You'll also want a good hydraulic trolley jack (one with wheels) and some ramps (you'll want to have the car pretty high up to give you room to get the transmission out from under the car.)

It would also be helpful if you grew some extra arms. :)

Hopefully, by this point you're starting to be afraid of this job - that's good! Like Larry said, you're better off getting someone else to do it. I've done 4 transmission removal/installations in various vehicles, and I wouldn't even try it on the Celica!

As for installing an LSD, this involves dismantling the transaxle. I've dismantled/re-assembled a transaxle on an 87 CRX; as a result, the car can no longer be shifted into 5th or reverse!

Jess you guys make it sound like its impossible to do or something. I mean come after the 3rd/4th times we had tranny out it only took like a hr with 3 poeple whole job in like 4
Too bad the first took like 12hrs not including the **** that got broke.
As for the clutch replace it when you replace the flywheel. Heard a couple of haror stories of poeple not doing it and having to replace the clutch sometimes also flywheel in like 3000 miles  But any place you take it SHOULD tell you that if not i wouldn't trust there work. But thats just me i don't trust anyone and will be doing my on my own in the spring hopefully.

these guys have no clue, don't listen to them ;)

this all you need:

spare tire jack
big sledgehammer
duct tape. lots of duct tape.

to get underneath your car:

measure and dig a giant hole in your backyard. jump in and have a friend drive the car over it so it's right on top of you.

let us know how it goes :D

carboy in houston offered to do the whole thing.
good deal...nobody else would touch my ****.
they ordered an ACT street disc clutch (the softest ACT makes...good up to 233 ft/lbs) and all new pressure plate throw out bearing etc (i hear toyotas throw out bearing sucks the big fat schlong)
and i just brought boxes with the lsd and flywheel...they said no problem.
they also offered to dyno tune an AFC.
these guys seem pretty cool.
