A cat back goes from the cat (duh :p ) all the way to the tip at the end of the rear bumper. The cat is located a little bit behind the front wheels. If you look under the car, you can see a large bulge in the exhaust system, which is the cat. This system will be the freest flowing since all the piping size(s) and mufflers/resonators are optimized to work with each other, maintaining a smooth flow of exhaust gasses. The Kazuma exhaust is an example, and though not street legal, it produces the most power of any exhaust currently available in the US for the Celica.

An axle back only goes from the rear axle to the tip. It connects at the flange in front of the rear wheels. Axle back exhausts don't produce as much power as cat backs since we have a resonator in between the cat and the flange at the axle. The resonator reduces exhaust noise, but it is also quite restrictive. Some people get the resonator cut off because of the restriction. 99% of exhaust systems made for the Celica are axle backs.

Dug up a pic from SCC:

That's the HKS axle back exhaust. You can see the flange at the upper left hand side of the screen. That's where the HKS exhaust ends, and the stock piping begins. A cat back would go way beyond that flange.

I don't know of any "Celica" specific, High-flow cats but, I know there are some aftermarket cats available that will fit on the celica...
