I am about to order new tires for my 17x8 superleggeras. First of all is there any problem with how this size fits the 17x8? I have 215/40-17 now. I am leaning towards Yokohama AVS ES100. Any opinions of these? I was also looking at Sumitomo HTRZ II but I've heard they are really loud. I want good performance, not too loud, and preferably in the $100 a tire range.

I have 215/40s on those wheels now and they aren't anywhere near rubbing so I don't think it should with the 225/45. Hopefully someone that has this set up can tell us for sure.

What is for sure is that you're planning on a much bigger wheel than now. Be aware that total diameter of your current setup (215/40-17) is 603.8 mm (vs. 611.4 stock) and you're planning on 225/45-17 that makes the total tire diameter 634.3 mm.
I don't think you'll rub as I've heard ppl with 18's who don't rub.
However the visual difference will be VERY noticeable (you'll get rid of any fender gap). Not to mention the final driving ratios... much slower!

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I knew it was a big step up in size but I don't think it should be that noticable as far as the gearing should it? This thing is not exactly a straight line speed demon anyway, so I'm going more for looks and hopefully better grip. This is the size that is run on both the Hotchkis car and the TRD celebrity cars so I assume it must work well.

kumho mx or falken azenis would be my picks...both less than 120...

I was wanting the Azenis but since there will be verry little autocrossing done on them and mostly street driving I was concerned that I wouldn't get enough mileage out of them and that they would be annoyingly loud. What do you think? If they aren't too loud I might still think about them. do you know of any problems with either of those tires fitting on a 17x8 wheel?

on an 8" wide rim i'm pretty sure u can go up to 235mm. It's all about the offset, if ur rims don't rub, ur tires won't either. That is unless u somehow get a tire that is wider than the recommended width of the rim so it bulges out. Yeah i hear azenis wear pretty quick i think 200AA whereas the kumho mx are like 220AA

Well, I think I'm leaning back towards the AVS ES100. It is supposed to be quiet and have a much longer treadlife than the Azenis and still prety comparable grip. I'm still thinking about the Azenis though.
