I got my oil filter wrench for 8$ at Pep Boys.. It's the kind that looks like pliers and it is adjustable to fit a wide range of oil filters.

$23 6 quarts of mobil 1 synthetic
$8 oil drain pan (too much)
$7 gas can to transport it in
$7 oil filter wrench
$2 oil bolt gasket
$5 oil filter
--------------------------------------------------------------------
$52
yay. Got it off with help from my Dad. He's so leet. Car is running nice I guess. Is it true you only need 5k miles for oil changes with synthetic?
Kit99bar

instead of buying a gas can
I use the empty containers of the new oil I just put in.

i'm assuming you mean the drain plug thing when you say oil bolt gasket?
should you change that with every oil change? where can i get one? the dealer?
if it's only $2 i might go and buy like a dozen or something to last me a while... :D

why would you need to change this thing?
its like changing the oil cap that's in the engine or something
useless

oh yea my first mobil 1 oil change cost me about $70
lol
old oil filter's rubber gasket was still on the engine part, and I put the new one on top of it... and there was hole between engine and oil filter..
soon as start the engine, damn all new expensive mobil 1 oil was on the floor, leaked.. (don't buy cheap filters)
So I had to buy 4 more mobil one oils..
Anywayz why do you need 6qts of oils in celica?
4 1/2 is perfect.. 5 is too much.. 6 is way too much(you'll damage the engine)
save 1/2 for next oil change..

I bought six because I got them in bulk at BJ's wholesale. Six for $22! Owned. I put in five quarts and did notice it was a bit high. Should I worry about this much? Should I keep putting the dip stick in and wiping it until I get rid of enough oil

just becareful next time... I really don't know what's it gonna do to the engine.. it just saids on the manual..
LoL, it's gonna take all day and night to wipe it out with dipstick..
If you are worried, take out the oil filter and drain some of the oil left inside the oil filter, since u bought oil filter wrench..

Only put the oil filter on HAND TIGHT!!!!!

A little less than 3/4 turn, more like 5/8 of turn, so that no wrench is required for the next oil change.

You can buy one of those little round oil filter remover from your Toyota dealer for $6. I got one from my dealer that fits only the Toyota oil filter 90915-YZZA2 or YZZA1, all I do is attach a extender to the socket wench and then attach that round oil filter remover thing to the extender, and thats it. Nice and simple. Only reason I bought this was because I had a hard time removing the oil filter with the oil filter wrench. This piece I bought from the dealer makes oil changes so much easier and quicker.
Oh, and yeah like what someone said. You hand tighten the oil filter, never use a wrench to tighthen it.....

same thing happened to me the first time the celica got its first change. i have the band type filter wrench and and i couldnt get that to lock and turn. i went to pep boys and bought the smallest "cup" type wrench that connects to a ratchet but it was still too big so i wedged a rag in between. now its all hand tight.

Well this is me. My damn filter is stuck. Tried the little cup deal the filter is stripped, tried a boa wrench thingie but no go. Tomorrow I'm taking the afternoon off and seeing if I can buy an oil filter wrench. My other plan is to epoxy the little cup dealie onto the filter. I'm going to try that tomorrow if an oil filter wrench doesnt work.

It very easy. Try it out.

i also had to buy a oil filter wrench before, but they were too long to move around the engine and actually get a grip on the thing ..but now..that i made me some ramps...i can easily get under my car and twist it off with my hands. What me and my friend ended up doing before i got a oil filter wrench, was get a big C shaped vise grip and clamp it on, bent the heck out of the oil filter but..who cares we needed it off.
easy fix to this problem anyways...do you own oil changes and dont over tighten..it dont take much

Great job searching for a similar topic, Rob, instead of making a new one, though this is a bit old.
Sucks that some noobs don't search before making lambo doors, electric superchargers, and power chip threads. :furious:

To remove oil filter:
1: Try with your hands.
2: hurt your hand and get a bloody knuckle.
3: Get really pissed off
4: find hammer and screw driver
5: SHOVE THE GOD DAMN SCREW DRIVER THREW THE OIL FILTER
6: After loosening the oil filter remove the rest of the way with your un-injured hand
7: Laugh at yourself for being a *****
8: Throw the mangled oil filter in direction opposite of your car
9: Find oil filter and dispose of properly.

I usually don't need to use a wrench for the filter, but I have one that has these 3 legs that clamp closed when you apply a ratchet to it, dunno how it's called there.

I have always done my own oils changes, but it is was a B**** that first time when you are like who put this freakin oil filter on... The Hulk?
And that is when you resort to the method TheMuffinMan stated and just gab the screwdriver and rip the B**** right off of there.
But make sure when you right down your mileage for the oil change that time to make a note to buy an oil filter wrench before changing the oil the next time

I always thought that you are supposed to drain the oil closer to operating tempreature so that it will drain better. Doesn't that make your filter hot?

On the topic of oil changes.. I found this:
Easy Flushes When Changing Oil - Drain out about one quart of oil. Replace that quart of oil with a quart of diesel. Run the engine (in place) for 3 minutes. Do NOT drive the car with the diluted oil in it. The diesel will help clean out passages in the head and will make the oil the thinner, so more comes out quicker when draining, bringing with it any dirt and grime. We have done this on our farm for over 50 years. My dad showed me how to do this growing up, and we now have 260,000 miles on our 94 Ford Crown Victoria with no engine wear (burning oil) and the engine has never been taken apart. Particulates that get trapped in passageways break free sooner or later!
Is that a good idea? Anyone done it?

Add a quarter a bottle of Seafoam into the oil 50-100 miles prior to changing it. Add the remaining seafoam into the gas tank.

It's so easy to buy a cheap but good oil filter wrench.

You guys need to put some oil on the filter's rubber gasket with your finger. Then hand tighten it. The oil will help it to come off easier when you go to take it back off.
