'01 Jetta 1.8T vs. Celica....5 freeway close to highway 55

So I am heading home from my girls house when I start to merge onto the 5 freeway going south at 11pm. I come up on a black Celica, sorry wasn't paying attention to the badge, and noticed it was going about 85mph and then slowed to let me catch up. We get next to each other doing about 80mph and we both gun it. I kind of pulled on him but I think it was due to traffic coming up. I slowed and he proceeded to pass me and cut me off to avoid the shoulder.

We are now on highway 5 going south which has 5 lanes. We are both in the middle lanes but he is about 5 cars behind me and one lane to my left. We catch a clearing and we are doing about 85-90mph. All of a sudden I see him starting to go WOT again. Well of course he gets a jump and by the time I am going WOT he has gained about 3-4 cars. We are now doing ~120mph. He is on the far left and I am on the far right lane. There wasn't too much traffic but enough so that we couldn't go full out speed. At no point did he pass me. We were pretty even but again I think it was due to the traffic circumstances. We were pacing eachother @ 120mph for about 1/4 - 1/2 of a mile. I had some more power to put down but I can't speak for him. I was getting nervous about going to jail for the kind of speeds we were doing. I braked hard knowing nobody was near me. He was just about to take the 55 south car pool exit when I slowed aggresively. Just as I slowed and he passed, he turned on his hazard lights. Ok, I am going to assume that was his way of telling me "good run". In no way did either of us smoke one another or pull hard.

Anyways, I am saying good run.


My engine mods;
1.0bar chip
2.5" Cat-back exhaust


I am yet to dyno but from comparisons to similar setups as mine, I would guess I am cranking about 210HP and 190WHP.


I have no idea what he has. He was driving the latest model Celica.

what kinda 1/4 et and trap speeds do 1.8ts with your mods put out?
also what kinda 1/4 et and trap speeds does a 1.8T with a boostcontroller, intake and catback exhuast (no downpipe) put out?

A good average for my exact specs and engine code would be 14.5 @ 95. I have seen a few 14.2's with my setup. Now slap on a 3" downpipe and High Flow cat and people are doing high 13's @ 100.


Most peole in the VW / Audi world don't use manual boost controllers. They are available but not popular. We mainly stick to chips that are either soldered, socketed or flashed onto the ECU. I have an AutoTech 1.0bar socketed chip. This chip brings my boost up to about 15-16psi.

210 at the crank and 190 at the wheels?

if he had nothing left at 120 it was not a gt-s cause mine will easily top over 130-of course thats not maxxed ive seen 140 in a friends ride that was at about 8000 though

sorry bout the double post but i can kill a stock 1.8t. in my gt-s dont get me wrong ive heard chips an vdubs are a good combo but i ROAST a stock 1.8t by like 5 car lengths.
my friends si can beat those pretty easy too. the only new vw ive seen with heat is a golf wit the 1.8t.-and a chip boost controller and turbo upgrade. but that car is very fast..

I'd venture to say that with those two mods your not putting down anywhere close to 210whp. I put down 195whp with intake, 3 inch TB, NS turbo inlet. Dynoed again wit samco turbo inlet and put down 205whp. Being that your car is still is being restricted from the downpipe. Can't really compare hp numbers just because sojmeone has a similar set up either. all cars respond differently to mods. I run 14.1@97, and now my mods are more then what is posted.
