Hi guys,

I had some serious problems with my engine. My european celica t-sport (192hp) had about 3000 miles on and I was driving in the city, after I stoped at a traffic light the engine swithces off and then when I turn it back on I hear a LOUD BAD ASS noise from my engine. The best way to describe it is a cracking sound which became faster as rpm became faster. I could also smell my rear bumper melting because of the high exhaust temperature.....

It was a nightmare. That was on a friday night so I leave the car during the weekend and took it to a Toyota dealer on Monday morning. On my way there the engine was fine but after fuel compression raised then the f****ing noise starts again. It was sooooo loud!!

My dealer told me that my engine was dead. They described what happened to me but I don't know the engine terminology in English...i think the Rod was broken....Anyway I had to wait for 4 f***ing weeks for a new engine and when I got my car back my new engine feels totally different. I didn't pay anything. It also sounds more healthy.....

That's it. I just wanted to share my experience with you people so that you know what's wrong in case you hear that cracking sound.......

Did it happen to anyone else? It did happen to more people in Greece. I guess we Greeks tend to abuse our cars quite often...

I heard that there was a recall in canada and japan...maybe because of the same problem?

The US 2ZZ's and 1ZZ's have had their share of wierd problems

When pushed above redline both engines develop serious integrity problems. Another messege board I'm on (vvti.net) has had 4 corolla engine (1ZZ) replacements due to over-revving. It seems like theres a fair share here too.

From what I understand from your post..
-your connecting rod became bent from very high compression...?
-or did it break b/c of a bad mold? If it broke you probably would not have been able to keep the car running and the dealer should replace the engine due to scoring on the cylinder walls.

The engine technology is great but the internals can't keep up. Poor engineering on Toyotas part.

There was a recall lately here but I think it was for camrys. Something about poor oil pressure and poor engine lubrication.

Camry has never used a 1ZZ or 2ZZ... I dont remember hearing about any oil pressure related recall either - where do you live?

I think it was one of the 4 rods (if there are 4). It broke completely and that's why there was the cracking sound. The problem is I never overreved my car. But I drive near the redline very often so there you go. maybe because of that....who knows?

Maybe a bad mold from the factory as someone said? How do you guys explain the fact that the new engine is louder at about 2-4000 rpm?

That isn't related.... Somebody mentioned recalls and its just the only current recall I know of (here).

I live in Virginia

Maybe there is a good reason why the 2002 gt-s has a 7800 rpm fuel cut-off. And maybe the twelve less hp that you guys have in the states are for a good reason too. Maybe not only for emissions. who knows...
