Like opening the door and light come up while the engine is off.

Find the power wire of the dome light and tap it with the power wire of the neon light ... at least that's what I'd do.

Where does it located at and what color is it? I don't like to look through it because I know I will look for the wrong one.

tapping into the power won't work. it uses the ground for the switch. what you have to do is use the dome light's ground (for open door on) as the neon's ground. i did a three way switch, on all the time, door on, and off, just like the dome light. i love it, gets some use from the neons.

sweet there is a way to do it, i think i might have to put my neons back in and wire them up like that. I always wanted to do that and I always wanted to have a neon underbody kit that would light up with my alarm when I'd hit a button, but i never ended up getting exterior neons

Where the ground for the dome light located at or if you could take a picture of it, that would be better. Thanks. I wanna do it by this week. Is it possible to hook up four neon without frying the fuse.

you need to build a relay circuit off the dome light negative trigger.

I made mine similarly. I basically hooked up the wires to the dome light wires, and so the neons come on whenever the door is open. However, I wanted to ride the car with the neons on. For this, I made a tiny switch in the dome light using a dremel to make a hole. Then I connected the dome light itself to this switch. So when i want to drive with the neons on, I turn on the factory dome light, and turn the miniswitch for the dome light itself off. Not as nice as a relay, but it works.

alright dude. this is what i did. since the switch for the doors is a GROUND switch, not a power switch, find a 12v source of power and hook that to the neon's power (i used the dome light's power wire since i was going there with the ground anyway). then take 2 ground wires, 1 to a switch that grounds. this is a normal setup and will make them always on. take the second ground wire, and hook it into the dome light's ground. you can find this by the driver's side door. take out the dead pedal plastic piece. its a red and a blue wire. one is a 12v and one is a ground. they're by themselves and the are coming from the panel on the left of the windshield. i'm not sure which is ground, but you would think its blue. so my guess is red. because i thought it was backwards from what i expected. you can make sure by unscrewing the dome light, and pulling it all apart. you can look at the switch and tell which is ground. anyways, so i used i ran the ground there and used a switch for that one as well. so i have two switches, turn one on and you get on all the time, turn the other on and you get door only. you can also do just one switch and use a three way switch but i just used what i had. works great. i have some pics of my switchs and the red&blue wire. i'll attach em.

ok so the red and blue wires coming from the grommet are the ones. splice into them. the rest is just switches and stuff you probably already know how to do.

could you show me how to hook it up? like step by step. thanks

I looked and didn't find the 2 wires.I found a bunch of them where you only have 2 wires. Is that picture of a celica without a sunroof. Does anyone know wich wires to tap for a dome light with a sunroof ?

FYI: In the future threads like this should be posted in "Audio, Electrical and Security".
alright dude. this is what i did...
Nice post!
you need to build a relay circuit off the dome light negative trigger.
:stupid: If you don't do this and your neons pull more current than the body ECU can handle... you'll smoke the pass transistor in the ECU. It isn't rated for alot of current.
DOME Neg = red/white wire in the drivers kickpanel that leads up the A pillar.

Instead of neons I had some leds and decided to do this.

Three blue leds on each side.Just drilled the holes, the leds I picked up at Advanced auto parts ( cheaper than radio shack and they a ment fo cars). I just super glued them in ran wires from the passenger side to the driver making just 2 wires negative and positive.Next I ran them directly to my dome light, added a inline fuse and they turn on when the door opens and when I turn on the dome light.
This is what I did for my trunk. Its two leds on each side right infront of my neons.I just added an inline fuse after my trunk light and wired these leds in.

I can make a more detailed write up and put it in the install guide if somebody wants.

Your ground for the dome light is the little black stoppers on the door frame of the car.
Just open the door and press it and the dome will cut off, release and its on. the Glow sill that have celica on them use the ground. Like 2way said becareful you pull to much and your going to pay more than what you wanted. I would use leds. Smaller use less power and are brighter than neons

^^ yup he is right. just use the door stopper as the negative and find a constant positive and ur good

2way, could you elaborate more on this?

This could be done another way as per the TRD / JDM route via the left hand side footwell tirminals in the pics below, but for low current LEDS / bulbs but this only gives you the open door light for what ever period of time when open / closed. You can always run a switch across to have them on perminately

RELAY COIL

DOME output of Body ECU (goes to GND on door OPEN)
Wire the COM contact of the relay to provide what ever you wish to gate (+B or GND) to the LEDS/EL strips/cold cathode tubes. Wire the NO contact to the device.
This isolates the outboard lighting from the DOME circuit... but allows that circuit to control/gate your devices. Lights will light on ANY door opening.. including the hatch.
If you want to be able to turn them on manually, as well, then you would add a diode to the DOME lead to the relay coil and to the lead you run to a switch which will go to GND to turn on.
DOME -|<- Low Side of RELAY COIL ->|- N.O. Switch/ - GND
