Good rule of thumb is to try to get the price to 3% over invoice. But how low you can get it depends on how much demand there is for the car in your area.

Hi trdteam,

If you're buying a 2001 model you should wait a couple of weeks as the dealer will be trying to get rid of this model to get ready for the 2002 sales. You may then be able to get a great deal because they have clear those out to make room before the end of the year usually. If you're getting a 2002, good luck. Try coming in and out of the dealer for three days and negotiate something each day. Worked for me, I talked them down over 2,000 off of their sticker price.

Good luck!

Fin

This is what I did...

I wanted a GT with options that are hard to find in my area (ACtion Package, side air bags...). I sent out emails to 6 different dealers requesting a quote. In the email I listed each option I wanted along with dealer invoice pricing. Some dealers refused to order the car saying that you can't special order a toyota. Others tried hard not to quote over email. I ended up getting a quote for 1.5% over invoice from one though. They also had no problem ordering the car for me. I ended up going with them (now I have a 3-6 month wait for my car!).

I know 1.5% over invoice is good because I test drove a GT at another local dealer. Before we went out the salesman gave some BS line saying that some girl test drove it earlier in the day and she was offered a "great" price. She had gone home to talk it over with her family. Total BS if you ask me. Anyways when we were driving I told the guy the price I was offered at the other dealer. He fell silent. He said he'd have to ask if they could beat that. WHen we came back - he said they couldn't. Then they tried to tell me that the price was too good and the other dealer couldn't possibly deliver the car at that price. They tried to tell me that they were going to change the price on me - I told them I have it in writing.

Read www.carbuyingtips.com. (http://www.carbuyingtips.com.) Also get invoice pricing from edmunds.com.

As soon as I get a build date I am going to post a review in the dealer/service experience section about the dealers I dealt with.
