Welps, the time has come! I was driving to get some groceries with my g/f when she asked soooo... is this car faster than your GS-R?? I gave her the eye, looked down at my odometer and it read 660 miles. Hmmm.... break in period...break in period DAMN IT!! Thinking in my head.... then she says.. I think your Celica is slower..... uh..:wtf: soo we took a corner and I said what the hell, I got on it 4....5.....6K BAM!!! Yes it caught me off gaurd..and I bounced off the rev limiter. Hmm it seems like my celica cuts off at 8100?? Sooo I tried 2nd gear... hit lift and boy this little car screams! She said YUP IT SURE IS FAST!! I'm all giddy inside, it sounds real nice too! I tried landing lift in 2nd but I can't do it! I shift at about 8100 because it seems like I'll hit the rev limiter anything afterwards and I always land about 5900! I shift fast too! Hmmm...... interesting.

Sum it up, Stock for Stock I think my GS-R had more pull from 0-6K RPM but the Celica does pull better up top. I have to get use to the shifter on the Celica... going hard into 2nd I always catch the far left Reverse gate and missing damn it!

Do you guys think 660 miles is good enough for break in? I mean I've been babying it since day one with 4 miles.

Don't try to shift too fast into 2nd. It will put excess wear on the 2nd gear synchro, and eventually start grinding.

lift is awesome the first time. I hit lift right outta the dealer's lot, 10 miles on the clock. I was nice to the car the rest of the break in period, though I did manage to clock 1000 miles in two days.

Even though lift goes against the ideal "flat power curve" theory, it sure is fun, isn't it?

I would take some time to analyze your shifting habits. It sounds to me that you are pulling the shifter slightly towards the left when shifting 1-2. If done on the 3-4 upshift at redline, you could end up in second, and no one wants to talk about what happens then. Consider repositioning your hand with your palm faced away on the 3-4 shift. This will help to relieve the effect of pulling toward the left, and should land you in 4th.

As far as staying in lift on the 1-2, I can do it in my '01 GT-S, but I reserve it for extreme circumstances. I feel that this shift is too hard on the transmission to be done regularly, and will lead to premature failure. I usually land at 5800-5900 with a gentle touch, just ready to drop into lift again.

As far as break-in goes, the most critical miles are the first ones, becoming exponentially less critical as you approach 1000 miles. At 600, it is pretty well broken in, and it wouldn't hurt to run it into lift once in a while. During my break-in, I ran into lift a few times, but never quite under full throttle, or beyond 7000 RPM. I wanted to make sure the damn thing worked, and I felt it was alright to exercise those components also. I'd save the real driving until after 1000 miles though.

Your tach might just be slow. Reads 8100 when you're actually at 8200 or 8300.

LOL i hit mine at 150 miles .... couldnt resist.
So Xfactor....... which one do you think the GT-S or GS-R is faster?

I think the GT-S does like 15.2 in a 1/4, and the GS-R does like 15.7 in 1/4 .... could swing allitle.

Is lift like hitting boost with a turbo?!?

I waited for a couple of days to hit lift, not sure what my mileage was probably around 250 miles. Gotta love lift :)

you've got to consider that if you purchased your Celica off the lot, and it was test driven by people who wanted to feel the lift, then your car has been there several times already (probably with nearly 0 miles on it). While breaking it in is a good idea, it's not 'bad' to hit lift during its early miles.

Strange,

I have an '03 GT-s and my rev limiter is at 8300 or so. If I shift fast at 8100 and dump the clutch (pretty much in any gear) it slips just enough to stay in lift while the clutch catches up with the engine. I expect to be replacing the clutch in about 20k miles with that sort of treatment though.

Yea we all hit lift at least once before it's broken in... just try to be gentle with WOT until you get to that 1k mark.

As far as hitting the shifter gates, my big problem was 2nd to 3rd. I kept hitting the right hand side of the 3rd gear gate. It takes some practice to get it just right.

You car will be fine. dont let this "break in" scare you. once or twice will prolly be good on your engine, seeing as it will make sure everything seals correctly.

NOOO! You should wait a bit longer, couldn't resist the tempation huh? ;) I agree with the comparison you made between the GSR and GTS. I used to own a 94 GSR and the Celi has a better top end pull, probably due to the VVTL-i. One thing I wish I could have retained from the teg would be the shifter. Even up to this day, my Celi 6spd still feels notchy in comparison. That was always one of Hondas strong points... did you land your 1-2 shift ok?

I did the same thing as you man! the different is that, the one sit next to me was a man.....( sad..... and i am not gay!) he just keep thelling me that his friend's C320 is so fast (What the Fxxk?) then i hit the lift when it was the 4th day after i got the car .^_^. Also I had the shifting problem like you~ but them I get ues to it~
BTW do you know if you could ask your dearler of how much would it cost if i want the HID? because when I bought my car, the dealer told me that it hadn't come out yet...
THX for sharing this, it is fun to have someone doing the same thing~
