I'm changing my own oil for the first time now that I just bought a house (yay!!).

Thanks.

It depends on how much you drain out of the filter and oil pan. My GT-S always takes 4 to 5 quarts.
Add 4 quarts, and make sure that the oil is not draining out the plug you forgot to put back in. Start the car and let it idle for 30 seconds. Turn off the engine and park on level ground, then check the oil level and add oil as needed.

No, the manual give you the exact oil capacity of your engine. Only your dipstick can tell you the exact amount that you should put into your engine at any given time. You should add oil up to the FULL line, but no higher.
I say this because of a recent call on Car Talk (an entertaining NPR radio show). A caller said his wife told him the borrowed mini-van was out of oil. So he added 4 quarts, without even checking the dipstick. This was not so good for the engine.

Think of the dipstick as the bible.
Gods Chariot runs on Faith, what's oil?
