Hey guys i plan on replacing my belt tensior, but the bolt on it is too long to remove. I have to jack up the engine somehow in order to fully remove the bolt. Is it possible to lift the engine from the bottom on the right hand side (alternator side). I am assuming I could remove the Right Side engine mount and jack the engine from the bottom so as to allow the engine to lean higher on one side. Do I have to worry about the transaxles from bending or anything else being stuck?

Uhhh, I think you better take another look. I highly doubt they had lifting the engine in mind for replacing a belt tensioner. I know I don't have the car anymore and can't check, but that just sounds to weird. Not dogging you, I'm sure you tried, but take a look at, or buy, the Toyota Service Repair Manual for the car, it should have all you need to know.

Actually if u look at the online manual theres info that relates to cam gears and its chain...in that procedure there is belt tensioner removal...so i just want to verify the possiblity of lifting the engine as stated in the online manual

You are totally correct, it is too long a bolt to remove with the engine in its positon.

To remove, I usually undo the three bolts on the left hand mount, this is safe as theis mount sits on the chassis member and side of inner wing so the engine won't drop out. Now use a jack with a block of wood on top under the sump to lift the left hand side of the engine high enough to remove the bolt.

It may be possible to remove the tensioner without all this palaver, thinking about it now, it could be possible to undo the nut at the top of the ram, remove the stud from the head which frees the tensioner. Then you may be able to undo the bolt enough to get it clear of the casing and lift the whole lot out. I've never tried this so it may not work, you will also need the correct stud spanner for the job.

Me, I'd stick to lifting the engine up a bit :)

Whats a stud spanner...is that a technical term for flexible rachet wrench?? Will the oil sump collapse from all the force exerted on it.

A stud spanner is a lot like a normal spanner except it has a six point star type head, I'm not sure if thats the correct name for them but its the only use I have found for them so thats what I call them.

So long as you put a piece of wood under it to spread the load, preferably long enough to stick out from front to back on the sump by about an inch then you shouldn't have a problem, I have done this many times with no problem.

The only other way to do it is with an engine hoist, just connect the crane to the engine mount and pull that up.

Hehehe, just starting on stripping all the interior again ready for the full rollcage to be built in. Then its fuel system time and a bit of tuning.

We are aiming for a fully tuned car before the 19th of February as we will be taking it out on the track at Goodwood, should be against a few interesting cars so we'll se how well it holds up :) Should make for some interesting footage.
