SUP!!
Being just pulled into the world of modifying my celica, i got a TRD exhaust on my GT-S automatic and just love hearing the sound to say the least heh but now i want MORE!!! I have been thinking A LOT about getting the CAI from larryd but the only thing stopping me is hearing about problems with having it on. Searching through the boards i found problems about hydrolocking and know that it is really hard to do with a splash guard.(Am i correct about that??)
But i know i read somewhere about problems with something called a CEL. Something about it coming on and you had to get it fixed. I also read that to turn it off by resetting the ECU. What i need to know is this ok to do? How bad are the problems with the CAI?
so basically i want to know ARE YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR CAI IN TERMS OF PROBLEMS WITH IT?
Thx

hey dude, i live in daytona beach so im kinda worried about hydrolocking it cause it rains here all the time. the splash guard will help you out alot, just dont drive through deep puddles.
CEL = check engine light. it wont come one unless you do something wrong. mine came on and i just tightened some things and it has stayed off for 2 weeks.
Im very happy with it. i have an Auto GT-S and you can really tell the difference and the sound is great! although ive heared that if you already have an exhaust you wont hear it as loud.
btw, what part of florida are you from?

i installed it myslef. i have never worked on a car before and have never seen anyone work on a car before. if you can read directions then you can do it yourslef. you might wanna have a friend help you too, that always helps. just remember not to cut too much engine plastic off when you put the pipe down or it will rub against metal and tear a hole in the pipe.

oh yeah, another thing about the rain, we had the hurrican weather roll through here while i was on my way to class and it was pouring like a mofo and i didnt hydrolock ive heared people here say youd have to be submerged in deep water for a few seconds for it to happen.

okay. here's the deal about hydorlocking. you have to completely submerge the intake so that water is the only thing being sucked in. if you don't have it lowered, it's a good 10 inches of the ground. plenty of room. splash guards are recommended because of the placement of the cai. if you're worried about a little water, well...by the time the air hits the engine, most of the water would have evaporated.
the cel won't come on, as stated, if all vacuum hoses are put in tight and the sensors are connected properly.
hope this helps. you wouldn't...or i should say shouldn't regret your cai.

I read in the "Secrets about our ECU" thread that having a CAI and exhaust will lean out the engine too much. And that the '00 ECU and injectors will be messed up. That's why some of the guys blew up their motor at 40K miles. What do you guys think about this?

There is purportedly a TSB on the ECU and injectors for the 00 Celica. It has nothing to do with the CAI or exhaust. In summary, there is no quantifiable evidence to support what you have written.
hey C3LIC@PiZimp_002,
I've got the trd exhaust and the ingen CAI that I got from larryd. I put the CAI on about a month or so ago, and I've got no CEL yet. From what I hear, the 3rd Generation of the Ingen CAI is pretty solid, and people don't get the CEL if they installed it properly. Plus, it sounds baddass when you hit lift. Oh yeah, and it makes that cool sucking/swooshing sound when you shift or let off the gas. http://www.newcelica.org/ubb/smile.gif All in all, a good thing. go for it!
the installation wasn't that difficult either. I'd never worked on a car before, and didn't have a problem with it. It's nice to have a friend around to help you with the taking on/off the bumper, though.
good luck!

I just wanted to add a question. Above someone stated that theres some cutting of engine plastic. Is there lots of cutting or a little bit? And what parts are to be cut? I really dont want to damage the car too bad, but if its all on the indide it really doesnt matter too much.
Also, is the Injen CAI Larry is selling the third generation ones? And is it about the cheapest you can find around? 205 + 45 for the splash guard sounds like its just about right in my price range. Oh and whats the diff on the CAI that costs 205 ?

I was told that the third generation Injen CAI doesn't require any cutting of the plastic.
Please tell me if I was told wrong.
