"this was my post i put in below wiht the guy with his engine crapping out...
btw this all happened about three weeks ago, just never poseted it"
hmmm interestin.......i went to my dealer about three weeks ago bout the bolt problem. well let me tell u, i GOT BEAT by the main tech man saying that the only reason or engine dies is because if drivers not knowing how to drive it. AND that toyota WOULD RELEASE about the bolt problem IF THERE WAS ONE. they WOULD NOT open my valve cover off and check the bolt. i have an AUTO GTS and use the button up/down and shift at 8300 alot. i DID think i had a problem with lift but it ended up being a filter problem. but the ENTIRE point here is that THE AMERICAN TOYOTA delerships all around dont want anything to do with s**** off the internet, the guy told me that stright out.
***** supposedly this guy has rebuilt 45 GTS engines sicne the car has come out, when the GTS was FIRST anounced according to him the american tech people said that we will have problems OFF The wall with this engine, there ARE MORE FAILURES WITH THE GTS ENGINE THAN u people know, according to this tech (which btw seemed like a **** and didnt want to hear anything from a 19 year old) he said that toyota is blaming "misshifts, over revving and bad driving for most of the problems"
**** he also told me, in the 2003 GTS there is a new modification in the ECU that tracks where u shift and at wat RPM u were at at the time of the problem, and according to him, it has its own battery, so discconnecting the battery WILL not reset this. everytime the battery is connected the ECU battery gets charged, pretty much he said that now all they do is hook up the car to a computer (f****** lazy people cant do it the old fashioned way and use their hands and fix an engine) and it tells them where u were in the RPM range, they can trak oil pressure, knocks, LIFT, etc etc etc
*** also, he told me the FAMOUS BOLT does not, I REPEAT DOES NOT cause the porblem with lift, he told me if the BOLT does BREAK, u would hear a Clanging noise, like crazy, and if htere was a technical problem with this that toyota WOULD HAVE MADE A FIX, or released a TSB....so dunno wats going on wiht all the problems with the 2ZZ engine, but according to this guy, its out there and toyota isnt doing jack but blaming the driver.
btw- sorry this is slow long but i wanted everyone to know wat i have went through, i got the toyota service guy fired becuase he made HORRIBLE COMMENTS TO me about how my TRD exhaust sounded and that its not loud, also he told me that my car is a little "****" .wateva buddy, staright to the phone an reported him, accordin to toyota this guy was reported numerous times....interesting stuff guys ..peace jon

I have the second year production, it had the same problem. Also had the problem with the belt tensioner. Hopefully Toyota has fixed all these problems for the 2003. However I highly doubt it.

That tech is full of ****. The ECM most certainly does NOT track oil pressure or anything else differently. Nor is he right about the lift bolt (obviously replacing it has fixed quite a few cars) I'm glad he got canned. They guy sounds liek an award winning a$$hole. Remember - anyone the dealer puts in a uniform can be a tech, and a lot of times they will be bitter and opinionated, not to mention intimidated by our cars. Ther are not USED to VVTLi - most of them probably have almost no seat time in one and all they know is the rumors and shop talk about all you "young fast & furious punks" blowing them up with you bad driving and aftermarket parts and then THEY have to fix em.
Sad but thats the way they look at it. You can't really blame them because they never get the chance to see your side of things really, and when they do if you tell him whats wrong and that you found out over the internet their first reaction is always going to be a defensive one. The best thing youcan do is have they call the Technical Assistance line for confirmation. We know that THOSE guys know about the problems if you can just get the techs to call.
Ahh well - whatcha gonna do - its really NOT that much better anywhere else. Honda doesn't even warranty mis-shifts ONCE, and the domestics will all tell you to get lost as well. Even with all the problems Toyota STILL is doin the right thing and stepping up to fix em once for free, which is pretty cool.

while the # of misshifts have gone down(from what i read on the board), there is an increasing # of other problems that are rising with this engine:(
it's kinda like a trade off

ahhh yes yes .... i am calling toyota assitance line today, i couldget the the guy at toyota to call, "just call em, they know about this, and he kept saying that if it was serious they would report it" they just wont listen to me, so i guess i will call the assitance line, they know about the bolt problem???
as far as problems with the engine, seems that JUST recently there have been alot of problems surfacing. from where i stand i am predicting that within the next year or so we will start seeing alot more, just my .02 cents. peace

The majority of which is happening to people who miss-shifted.... either the repair and replacement was not extensive enough, or some people are a little too abusive.

good point!!! ......after i had my misshift(not my fault) fixed 1 1/2 years ago, i'v been having trouble ever since:mad:....yota wants lil over 5k for a new engine. well i'm thinking of buying a used bottom end for about 1/2 the cost.
is there any way to check if a engine has been misshifted and rebuild?

Could not of said it better myself. After the miss-shift my second engine has been nothing but problem after problem till it recently gave way when my oil pump went.

with 53k miles on my engine (completely stock) I would have to say the GT-S engine has been no problem (aside from the belt tensioner). I get the oil changed every 3k miles and use Castrol 10-30. To the people having problems after a misshift rebuild, don't blame the engine, blame the tech whoe rebuilt it and perhaps didn't do it quite right, or there may have been pieces of valve, piston or rod floating around that might have caused the problems

i would buy that block, then get the head done as soon as new valvetrain parts are available. port and polish too.
when you get the block, buy new pistons/rods as well.
turn it into a n/a monster ;) maybe crower's cams will be out by june like they say. and a new ECU to rev to higher rpm.
maybe someone will import inging's oil rotor/pump system that can handle high rpm.
this is known as fantasy celica la-la land, welcome :) it may or may not be possible or happen :D

I am proof that there is no clanging noise.
My bolt broke too and I would get erratic levels of lift
Sometimes it felt no lift, sometimes it was weak.
The tech does not know what he's talking about. He's just like service people at the dealership, they don't know about this and they like to talk **** like they do.
