it depends what speed you're going when you mis-shift. if you're going too fast for the (wrong) gear you shift into...then the engine revs too high and could be damaged.

if you're going 35 and shift into 2nd by accident i doubt it'll damage anything, but if you're on the highway and go from 6th to 2nd (instead of 4th), then you're doomed.

from what i've read (i haven't ever blown an engine) you would know if serious damage was done right away...as in the engine won't work or makes evil, nasty sounds.

i would search on this board for the max speeds of each gear in the celica GT and GT-S. i own an rsx-s, so i'm not familiar with the gearing of the celicas.

i mis shifted from 3rd redline to 2nd twice, i didnt mess anything up because as soon as i did it i threw the clutch in, but goddamn was i nervous after that.

there have also been peeps who misshifted by downshiftin from 5th to second goin to pass a car or somethin.... so basically misshiftin is missin the gear ur tryin to get into .. usually endin up in fatal engine damage

The GT can handle (I think) 57 miles per hour in second gear. The max speeds are listed in the ownders manual.
