so i guess we finally have our answer on ACD....and that answer is no.

i dont see it listed anywhere

/sigh

CelicaDetective

That's correct, no ACD or AYC for USA. Also, Japan gets a 6-speed versus our 5-speed. But the rest is GSR spec

Final gearring looks good too:

Gear ratios
1st 2.928
2nd 1.950
3rd 1.407
4th 1.031
5th 0.720
Reverse 3.416
Final reduction gear ratio 4.529

For under $30,000. They have gotta eliminate some features. This car is sold for above $30,000 elsewhere.

It would look pretty nice in a dark color Blue or black. I wish it came with a six speed.

My .02....they are ugly as hell.

to each his own, i LOVE the red

i guess it takes some getting used to, when you see these roaming around the streets, and you see it running 12 sec 1/4's with little mods, you'll like it too!

"Reduced weight and increased strength throughout the powertrain together with improved engine cooling performance result in outstanding dynamic performance, enabling Evolution VIII to boast maxima of 271 hp (275 ps) / 6500 rpm and 273 lb-ft (37.7 kgf-m) / 3500 rpm. "

oh man.. maybe its time to save up for one of these..

Gotta agree with some of the other guys here, this is gross. Falls into the WRX syndrome, nice performance in an ugly package.

i hope they don't release those altezza style taillights

a new front bumper should be made to look like EVO VII style... i like the 7 better also

dawgg
01-02-2003, 02:42 PM
maybe u can rig the evo7 bumper to fit on the evo8. 7 looks a hundred times better. Even the tail lights looked much better. Mitsu musta contracted APC to design the US evo8. Impressive they it will have 271hp. Sux that there's no ACD and AYC but i doubt more than 10% of buyers in the US would make use of that.

i like the 7 front better, im looking to get an evo when celica comes of lease in jan.2005

ill either have a bodyshop alter the midpiece on the 8 and remove it or get an aftermarket front.....
i love the car (acd / ayc maybe as options down the line by the time im ready to buy in 2005)

Well..honestly...although I bought the WRX..I didn't actually want it as much as my wife wanted it. It's her car..that's why it's only got a turbo timer on it. She doesn't want me to do anything to it.

Plus...I wanted AWD because we're in Tacoma,WA. The weather and snow are horrible up here, and I just wanted her to feel safe and have an edge.

I know I feel really comfortable knowing that she's in an AWD for nights like tonight, where's raining cats and dogs.

I still think it's ugly...but after watching WRC more, I respect the ferocity in it's ugliness as it comes barreling around a corner.

On the other hand, I couldn't say the same for the EVO. It's just looks SO outta place..it doesn't LOOK like it should have all that power.

Plus..the interior is SOOOO cheap looking. Have you guys seen it yet? Nothing but plastic, plastic plastic. I dare say it's as bad as the Celice when it comes to the amount of plastic in it.

TaeMachine
01-03-2003, 05:34 AM
people also used to complain about the cost of awd maintenance.

01-03-2003, 01:00 PM
My lease is up in a year and i am considering one. The interior may not be perfict but where does somebody who has a WRX come off talking about it. The wrx has the absolute cheapest interior i have ever been in. the cupholder doesnt even pop out when you push it.

Yepz...cus that thing is a f'ing boat and NEEDS them. :p (The WRX is a f'ing boat too..although I'm not sure which one weighs more).

And umm..there's no comparison between the WRX interior and the EVO. Have you even seen side by side comparisons of the two?

There's a WORLD of difference in the quality of materials used in them. I'm not saying the WRX is a luxury car, because it's not..but it cleary outclasses the EVO interior when it comes to fit and finish.

Plus, my cupholder DOES pop out when you push it. Not that I use the damn thing. I don't eat or drink in my cars. Unless I'm on a long distance trip or something.

TaeMachine
01-03-2003, 02:46 PM
so does the cupholder work or not? i'm torn between the two interiors.:)

ArchangelX
01-03-2003, 02:52 PM
LOL..it's got two cupholders..I never use the top one.

I just don't like the Lancer because it reminds me of a Neon or a Dodge Stratus when it comes to the looks of the interior and the outside is just too pedestrian. I mean how much better can you do than the stock bodykit or the previous generation's looks?

Same thing as the WRX....

01-03-2003, 05:22 PM
That thing is hideous. The VII and VI were awesome but this thing is plain nasty (esp taillights)

ArchangelX
01-03-2003, 05:25 PM
I agree that the front of the 7 is MUCH better..in fact..it looks newer in concept to me than the 8.

Much more purposeful..and less Pontiac-Saturn like. :puke:

One thing I think most people are forgetting is that the current model EVO doesn't look MUCH different than the U.S. Lancer...in concept and form.

Just imagine the car painted in a pedestrian Saturn color, and you'll understand why I don't think the car is that great looking.

A bright paint job will do wonders for making a car more appealing than it actually is.

I know AYC is "Active Yaw Control"

But what is ACD? ...active center differential?

In my opinion you are are better off without the extra powertrain controls. The simpler the better and more reliable.

sure, i understand the importance of big brakes, but in this case it must be a typo... the car comes with 17" wheels stock... there's no way you can fit 17" rotors inside 17" wheels. besides, not even the ferrari 575 maranello has close to 17" discs. something is not right here... just my .02

The Evo VII weighs <3000lbs, a few lbs less than the WRX STi, IIRC, and so a few hundred less than the WRX we have available right now.

Ah...thanks. I didn't know which one was heavier. But that is the Evo 7.

What about the EVO 8?

Yes ACD is active center diff.

This enables the driver to choose between 3 different settings for Tarmack, grave and snow.

These two features are what makes the EVO a better car than the Sti. Without them I think you guys are loosing on the EVO experience. It is just like you are getting a dumbed down version.

The RS which is sold in Japan though does not have these features either but has more aggressive diffs and is very light but without many accessories like air con etc.. The RS is uses as a base for the Group N rally cars. ;)

Ewww what have they done - its gone all curvy!! Doesnt look nice at all now.. the Evo 7 shape was much nicer imho.. maybe it had to be redesigned for the American safety standards or sommat.

the USDM EVO 8 should be light, less options than the foreign ones.

i think it looks pretty good. i loved the EVO 7, personally, but this shot looks cool, like a more futuristic, curvy EVO 7:

i want one in all black. :) silver is okay tho, looks almost like the kaminari kit on the celica.

I believe that's a typo on the website. Must be a car-illiterate idiot who typed that! Go here and scroll down to BRAKES. U will see 14" front and 12" rear. Also, the Live Webcast mentioned 14" front and 12" rear as well.

I do agree that I like the style of Evo 7 better, but look is not what the Evo is all abt! :) Welcome Evo 8!

Damn it, that front looks horrendous. All they need to do is get rid of the plastic part with the mitsubishi symbol. Otherwise it looks like the Vibe front.

and i don't think sunroof will be an option, most likely dealers are ignorant and will say anything to get deposit like " well, pricing isn't official but one w/ a sunroof will prob go for 27K. give us a grand and you'll be the first one in one" then later you HAVE to deal w/ that dealer cuz they got your G and they can twist you around "oh it'll only be another 3 weeks", the boat sank or some sh it

Actually I believe it is going to be more personal pref which car is better. The AYC on the Evo makes it stick better to the road but you can't discount the fun factor and beauty of a perfect drift around a turn. Gran Turismo is the closest thing I have come to driving the Evo but even there the WRX is more fun and a lot more driftable. However I think the Evo is going to be quite a bit of fun too with 271 Hp and 273Lbs of torque. And we dont know yet that you cant install the AYC aftermarket. I think this is a good thing even tho it is a direct competitor to my car I like them both and cosmetic looks are in the eye of the beholder. I love my cars more for what they can do and the way they look is just icing on the cake. The looks will grow on you and even if they don't I'm sure there will be plenty of aftermarket parts and bodykits for it to change your mind.
