I painted my interior black, the dash was a bish, we masked the whole windshield. I used " Dupli-Color" trim paint. It looks great. It's not shinny or glossy at all, it's like flat black

This Summer I am going to attempt to use vinyl dye on my complete interior to change it to a black color. From what I have read unless you sand down the surface it will not give a shiny look.
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/yourautotrim-store/semdye.html
Someone linked to this yahoo store earlier as a good place to pick it up. It is used a lot by people changing the color of their computer cases. Here is a howto on that sort of thing which makes it look pretty idiot proof.

Has anyone tried "vynil color" dye on their dash yet? I'm not talking about the center consol. I would like to know if this really works because i would like to change my entire dash to black. If no tried this yet. I will be the first to do it and see how this turns out.
Thanks

If you used vinyl dye on the center console there is a chance that the a/c control markings would show through still so vinyl dye might be a better choice than paint when it comes to the center console. As for removing the dash I was only able to locate pictures of it removed.
http://www.ecelica.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=16;t=000015
Here's the pics of me putting the dash back in for those who are interested. http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4291513663
I used single stage car paint which means that its got the clear coat built into it. I have to have a dash cover whenever i drive cuz the white reflects so bad that I can't see out of the windshield :chuckles: . Removing the dash is such a bish and is such a long detailed process- thats why i haven't posted on how to do it.

PEOPLE WE DO NOT WANT PAINTED CONSOLE PICS! Everyone and their mom has that mod ! We know what it looks like, we are talking about what beth does and wetworks garage on the modern image SeR and the Kenwood Eclipse for example. anyone know how to do this.
there many concerns...
1) How to remove the airbags in dash
2) How to replace them and connect all sensors back
3) Safety equipment needed for spraying paint - suit, mask
4) Dust free environment?
5) Over Spray, spray techniques
6) Where to get spray gun, paint

hey steve.......i think u should check out body shops first and ask them how much they would charge to do this project. cuz from what i'v researched, it's gonna take along time if u doing it by ur self and even longer if u don't have patience;)
if u think it's not worth the $$, then go ahead and do the project by ur self (or ask ur kid brother to help:gap: )

you must disconnect the battery first if you're wanting to remove the dash. i don't remember where all the screws are, but it's definitely doable and there are a LOT Of screws.
here's what someone gave me as instructions. you must wait at least a minute (just in case) after you disconnect the battery because the air bags have a power reserve, so it can still engage.
1 - Remove entire centre console and tunnel unit.
2 - Remove A Pillar panels (these just pull off)
3 - Remove Glovebox and passenger side under dash panels
4 - Remove passenger side airbag unit
5 - Remove Drivers side underdash panel (you will have to remove the bonnet release catch and OBD II plug)
6 - Remove instrument binnacle.
7 - Remove sterring wheel and switch gear (optional, I got mine off with this stuff on but I will need to remove them to get the unit back on without scratching the paint)
8 - Remove the end caps off the screws at each end of the big dash panel, remove the screws underneath.
9 - At this point you will need to get under the dash and remove all cable clamps which are attached to the dash panel, also look for cabling which is strapped to the air ducting.
10 - Give the unit a good pull at each end, there are three plug type fittings which atach it to the bulkhead, these should give way pretty easily.
Remove from car and have a lie down, you'll need it as you know have a car that looks like a pile of junk on the inside!!!!!
Seriously though, it is very important to handle the airbag units with care, no bangs or knocks as this could set off the explosive charge, not good, especially if it smacks you in the mouth. Also ensure you have disconnected the battery at the start of the job, this way you shouldn't have any accidents with the airbags.

in a 2000 GTS, and i am talking about the WHOLE dash not just the center, we had the WHOLE interior out of the car in a little over an hour, only thing left in it is drive seat and steering wheel

was there alot of connections in the back to unplug?? was it easy putting it back??

we haven't put it back in yet, its waiting to be painted
the hardest thing about taking it out is that all the wiring is clipped to the dash, we didn't pull the airbags like other people said to do, we took the whole dash out in 1 shot with the passanger airbad still in the dash

Can you read, the WHOLE dash took us under 20 min, and it was a little over an hour to take out EVERYTHING in the interior, that includes the headliner and everything on the inside
it wasn't 20 min to an hour for the dash, its was about 20 min for the WHOLE dash and about an hour for the WHOLE interior

ya i can read. Can you calm down?
If it takes you 20 min then could you tell us the fastest and easiest way to take them out. Like where all the screws and bolts are....what to take out in what order because i'd like to do it in 20 mintues also.

01-11-2003, 07:58 PM
there is only about 20 bolts/screws holding the whole dash in
2 people, one on each side,
we layed down with our heads under the dash just took out whereever bolts looked like they were holding the dash, then pull the dash outward, saw it was loose, then push it up and pulled it out the passanger side of the car
