Wassup everyone, i'm not sure if this is a problem but i'm from Canada and the winters are pretty cold where i'm from. On a cold morning when i start my car, the engine starts to rev repeatedly. I spoke to the dealership about it and they said it's supposed to do that, it's the engine warming itself up. Is he right or is he BS'ing me? Thanks

Mine does that sometimes too. I've been noticing it more as it's getting colder.

I've also been noticing a sound when I first start my car. Kinda sounds like popcorn (best way I can describe it). It sounds like it's coming from the cat area and when I start to drive the pops are more frequent. I really don't think it's backfires + no CEL. It goes away once the car is warmed up. Anyone know what that is? Probably just the cat warming up.

Almost all cars I've ever known/been in have revved during the winter. It's a common thing. It's because you have too such extreme temperatures (cold air outside) and combustion inside. It's nothing to worry about and it won't hurt your engine. As long as it's not revving high like 200 rpm or more. It generally is just fluctuation, no biggy. The popcorn sound I have no idea about. Also, if you want this "fluctuating revving" to go away quicker, you could sit in ur car for 2 minutes warming it up which would just involve stepping on the gas a little at a time to bring it up to like 3000 rpm. Just sit still in neutral and rev it a bit. Anyway, no biggy, don't worry about it.

Mines never done that. It doesn't get real cold in Georgia though, so maybe it only does it at really cold temp.

it's gotten down to 18 degrees so far here in arkansas, but it's felt like it's in the single digits. anyhow, mine still has yet to do that. in fact, i've never had a car do that, even when i lived in MI, so it really peaked my interest that some of yours do.

I live in Maryland and it has been pretty cold out lately...anyways, My Celica revs from between the ranges of 12 to 15 grand if I just let it sit and warm up. The car is only warming up its nothing, all of my cars have done this in cold weather. If you start the car right up and drive like a mile and sit in nuetral youll notice that since the car is warmed up more it doesnt rev so dramatically or idle as high. I'm not a mechanic, just an observer....I could be wrong and all of our cars are screwed!!!

sup guys..

its just started to get cold here in north florida....

i noticed now that when i start my car in the morning, it revs high..then it dips down and stays below 500rpm and starts making dying, gasping sounds...like its gonna stall out...

i have an injen cai installed..and thas where the gasping sound is coming from.....
the problems obviously that the cars not "breathing" well...

now in the morning, after i start the car, i hold the revs at 2000 with the gas pedal....no problems until yesterday when the CEL came on and stayed on for the rest of the day...

this morning i started the car and the CEL was gone...

anyone got any solutions when i start my car in the morning?..

Thanx guys....

Sounds like it could be a few things. I would check the MAF to make sure it is clean and in tight. Also, check your connection from the CAI to the throttle body. If that connection is loose or not airtight it can also cause that problem.
