my friend's been looking into an Si for over a year now, he's 17, and i've been helping him out.

we finally found one nearby, 30 something thousand miles, looks to be in GREAT condition. i mean...it doesn't look showroom new, but there's no dents/scratches, the rims are great, the tires have plenty of tread, engine bay's clean, stock. interior's spotless. and from what i checked, he only used Mobil 1 synthetic every 5000 miles, he SAYS he doesn't run it hard (but he knew what VTEC was and stuff, and showd it to us heh), but since mileage is low i doubt that matters cuz my friend's gonna run it hard. transmission doesn't squeak/grind or anything. doesn't make any weird noises at idles, the fuel injectors are a bit noisy tho. not nearly as loud as my celica's now cuz mine are messed up. but it's in that good condition. also it pulled very nicely in VTEC with 3 people in the car. the guy seems to have an incredible fear of redlining, so he goes to exactly right up to redline before he shifts. his driving's decent too, he shifts slowly and stuff but doesn't fall below 6000rpm, doesn't go with crazy downshifting...

anyway, he's looking for $14-$16k for this (he's in a rush to pay off student loans), my friend is prolly gonna do or die within the next 2-3 days w/his dad on this. i hope he gets it. he's gonna check carfax with the VIN number beforehand and stuff just to make sure.

what do you guys think? good price on an Si? (blue) is there anything in particular we should check for on the car or know about?

funny thing is, both that guy and my friend were busy drooling over my car while i was drooling over the Si...even after i took them both for a ride (the guy insisted), they were both like "wow your car pulls mad hard!", i guess it does have ok power just doesn't stay up in the powerband obviously. but the Si pulled almost as, if not as strong as, my car with same number of passengers in it. the other two were fooled by the noise of my intake/exhaust. so i guess it's making good power.

also mostly highway miles. he's had the Si for a year but takes trips to north carolina to see his girlfriend. obviously he has to be bull****ting on some points like not running the car hard, but it's nothing that i wouldn't expect.

$14-16k? Damn, invoice on them brand new in '00 was $15.8k.

whoa, you sure? it was more like $19k up in the northeast. they're selling now for at or above that cuz they're so rare...

When I had mine appraised by a dealer when I was about to trade, they said my car was worth about $13K. Keep in mind this is at the dealer. My car is stock with wing and alarm and had 33K miles on it. Try to get him to sell it at around $14K. $16K does sound a little high. I bought mine for $16.5K last year. Does he have mods on it? Is this a 99 or 00 Si? Definatly run a carfax report to make sure there aren't any issues with the car. Mobile 1 is a plus for the B16. Don't always believe that they don't run an Si hard. It's very hard not to redline it a lot because it's a fun little car to drive.

I wouldn't go higher than 14 grand for that car. I got mine at the same price Tenchi did 2 year ago. Well, it's been 30,000 miles and you said no problems with the trans, and as far as I know there are no problems with the Si to look for. The Si had a short run of problem swith the Third Gears synchro in it's first couple of months, but that was solved real fast.

Best mod you can do to your car is a good driver!

Another thing you might want to ask him is if he did a valve adjustment and the 30K maintainance. The valve adjustment is pretty important for the car. If not, that might be a good thing to do if your friend gets the car. You can also negotiate the price down a bit with the owner if he didn't do these things. Just an idea.

ok thanks, i'll let my friend know.

btw, i still have no clue how you guys are finding Si(s) for so cheap where you live! you're not gonna find one in good condition here for under $14k. i routinely see them at dealers going for $18k or over. (my friend got him down to $14,500 which is about exactly what the guy needs to pay off his student loans and can't go below). isn't kelly blue book value on that car like over $15k?

maybe cuz it's easier to find elsewhere.

my 00 SI cost me 16900.00 out the door, which is a really good price at least where im from. of course since then ive traded it in for my 00 celi gt-s much better....much faster too stock. and my SI had intake exhaust headers and a v-tec controller and a 1.5 inch lower.

I know of at least 5-6 SI's in my city and 3 are at my HS, maybe more; I always see a new one once in a while around here. Of course I do live in a rich type city (to bad I'm not rich... doh) but ya theres lots, I saw a race down the main stripe Lake Mary Blvd last friday night, sitting there getting gas a couple from my school pull up at a red light; a purple one and a black one (I know because they park like right up front all the time), didn't see the end but they were defently doing something sorta like racing of some sorta, chirps and bubble bee exhausts going at it. Cool stuff but they arn't rare where I live. GL and hope he gets a good one!

$17.5 sounds more like the MSRP, not the Invoice. I remember you could buy a brand new '00 Civic Si through carOrder.com for something like $16.1k, or about 250-300 over invoice if I recall. I know because I was going to get one before I got my Integra.

my car was 8k and faster than an si stock... it also has all leather interior and power everything. Maybe you should sway him from his honda course before he makes a rash decision.
for less than 16.5k total i could be running mid 12's

an MR2 wouldn't be practical for a 17 year old kid who's gonna have to drive all year 'round in NY weather (including snow). also, little to no maintenance on the civic. and great mileage. and all that happy honda civic stuff.
