Hi all, I've been a regular reader of the boards for the past month, as I was looking into a 2002 GTS for this summer. Turns out an amazing deal came around for a 2000 GTS that I couldn't turn down. I took it for a ride today, and man what a difference from a 1991 passat. I know I haven't driven it nearly enough to have a well-formulated opinion, however my initial impressions are good. I could also see how easy it is to mis-shift.

I do have one question though... we were checking out the car while it was running, and out of nowhere the engine just stopped. I re-started it, and at first it started idling erraticly, almost drowning out again before stabilizing itself. I also noticed the A/C light was flashing when I drove off with it, which I just turned off.

After calling the guy who's selling it, I told him about the problem and he was saying that the Air conditioner pulley had a problem with it and that he didn't have time to take it to a dealer. He said the engine kills itself as soon as it has any resistence from that belt not to cause any problems. Does this make any sense? For the price I'm getting it for it's not a huge concern, but I still wanted to check out the info the guy is giving me.

Thanks in advance for any replies...

Sounds odd to me. I've never heard of the compressor pulley killing the engine, and I've replaced two AC systems on my past car for pulley/compressor clutch failure. Usually the problem is that the pulley starts rattling and progressively gets louder and worse, but the AC system still works until complete failure.

Before purchasing the car, ask to have it checked by a professional mechanic of your choice. Even better, ask to have him bring it to the dealer, since it should still be under warranty.

Good advice.

And if the deal is sweet enough to be worth the cost, consider paying to have the car inspected.

Also, consider using CarFax.com to ensure the title is clean. A friend did this after spending $6500 on a used MR2 only to find that it had a salvage title. He was fortunate to get his money back; the dealer plead ignorance.

all i can interpret from afghan is having a celica is better than having a 1991 passat. he seems to think that having the older vehicle makes you a "redneck ... etc". i don't get it. wheres vvtlikick and those people with knowledge?

You missed my point or joke(over the head).

Not talking about the Passat. That was about an old conversation about Pontiacs and Chevys, I used to own one.

Just do what they said earlier and have a professional check the car and title to cover your bases before putting any money down on anything.
