2000 Celica Speed sold his broken Celica for #9,000 to a dealership... But he didn't blow his motor, but his tranny was crap, couldn't get it out of gear or something... He now has a S2000...

Sick of the car? Maybe you're sick of it because you can't drive. I mean, one mis-shift is understandable, but two is ridiculous.

2002GT you obviously own a GT NOT a GTS, so you dont understand.
You also dont know the history behind my car. It has been troublesome since I bought it new and quite honestly im bummed and dont feel comfortable owning it. I only asked a simle question.

I've had a GTS for over 2 years and haven't even come close to misshifting. Honestly, I don't see how people do it in the first place...it's very simple driving techniques to prevent it.

Could it be the car? Quite possible! Could also be me. I never really drove it that hard. The dealership that rebuilt the motor is very questionable. The nearest one is over 65miles. Another side note is that my car was the dealerships first to rebuild. It didnt even run correctly when I first got it back. I have loved my car since I bought, not to mention fun as hell to drive.

Best bet is to put a new engine in, then sell it. Or sell it to someone who is willing to out a new engine in it.

Why are people stock on the fact it was a mis shift????
That is not the case nor was it EVER! I have never misshifted driving my car! Jeeeezz you folks assume too much.

Good call! I would be happy with that. I just bid on a motor at ebay. Hopefully I'll win... If I do I'll have renewed faith in my celi.

The answer to your original question depends on how much you owe on it. If you owe $2,000-$3,000, then they might take it in, pay it off, put a new motor in it and sell it for $8,000-$10,000 and make a little off their investment (depending on how badly your engine is blown; if it's worse, who knows). If you owe more than that, it seems to me that you have a few other options:
1. Cut your losses now, trade it in and add lots of cash and get something else.
2. Suck it up and pay to get it fixed. Then learn how to drive your car and hang on to it for a while. For the record, before you get pissed at me, I have a 2000 GT-S that I have never misshifted. Not even close.
3. Keep making your payments and get the balance owed down. Then, when you reach the level I mentioned above, trade it in and see if the dealer will pay it off for you. However, that means you're paying for a car you can't drive and you might not want to do that.
Good luck.
Mike

What happened the first time when your motor went??
Do you know what exactly is wrong with it this time? A downshift to 2nd at 40mph wouldn't stress the motor too much.
A lot of people that miss-shifted and blew their motor never got it rebuilt completely, which left them with troubles later on (and eventual hatred of the Celica, even though it had nothing to do with the car, human error in breaking and repairing it).

Absolutely...go to the dealer, tell them to take a look at your computer...that will tell you how fast you were going (RPM speed) and that will show them that you weren't speeding, racing, screwing around whatever.
If you really were only going ~45mph, then there is no way in hell you blew your motor in 2nd gear....you car can hit 62mph in second gear at redline (~8300rpm)...you engine won't blow, or shouldn't blow until about 10k-11k rpm.
Good luck, and fight toyota for this one.

Water... Injen CAI, splash guard didnt work to well. Funny thing, it wasnt even a rainy day just a pool of water in the middle of the street. I tried to get around it best I could. Not nearly far enough though...

Huh?
I've never heard of that happening...wow...this is a first.
I've driven through Tacoma rainstorms with water flowing over the front lip (literally!!!) and never hydro-locked!!!

take it to the dealer, get arbitrition if necessary. This is NOT a mis-shift if you were only going around 35-40mph. Unless there was something else screwy that you did or happend, then I would definitely take it up with another dealership, toyota headquarters or arbitrition.

I think Im on the same track as a few of you. I called the customer care center and went through their line of questioning. I have an arbitration conference call mtg for monday next week 1/27 with the district manager and service writer manager of the dealership.
thanks for everyones input

Yes, I do own a GT, and no, I have never driven a GT-S. But I have been in many a car with a 6 speed manual and if you are careful, you shouldn't have a problem with mis-shifting. And sure, you hydrolocked the first engine, but I find it hard to believe you downshift safely and the engine just blows, there is more to the story than that I suspect.
Nonetheless, this is why I tell people all the time that if they live in a rainy area that a splash guard doesn't do much good in preventing hydrolock unfortunately. Too bad bypass valves don't work on our cars.

if it was due to water going into the engine, shouldn't insurance cover it if you have full coverage. of coarse paying the deductible.
