While you drive, is it bad to rest your hand on the shifter? Someone said on another post that in the manual, this is bad for your tranny... Something about messing up the sychos,.,,, Is this true... I have that habit when I drive but if it's bad for our car, I better stop... Thanks for the info in advance..

I remember hearing this when I was in Driver's Ed but not because of any concern for synchros or any other part of the car. They just wanted to reinforce the idea of having both hands on the wheel at all times.
My parents used to own a transmission shop and I can remember talking to our mechanics about it. If it does cause problems, they're minimal and hard to trace back to resting your hand on the shifter. I don't think it does any damage, really. And, if it does, I'm sure it's less than riding the clutch when downshifting or dropping the clutch hard when racing (or any other bad habits, for that matter).
I just wouldn't worry about it in regard to the synchros. That said, having both hands on the wheel is a different story. That's probably a good idea, don't ya think?

When you rest your hand on the shifter you are unintentionally pulling the shifter in one direction or another. Or when you go over bumps and stuff whith your hand on the shifter, you will unintentionally slightly pull the shifter a little. When you do this, the syncro's will make frictional contact with the next gear. Frictional contact between the gears is a normal function of the syncro, it's job is to do this to get the coller and the gear spinning at the same speed so they can engage(to get their speed synronized). But driving along mile after mile with the syncro grinding against these transmition components will quickly wear them out. Don't drive with you hand resting on the shifter.

I rest my hand on the E-brake as well, but go one step further by inseccently clicking the little button on top. Bad habit, and makes my passengers VERY nervous indeed.
Cheers!

I'm guilty of the e-brake clicking as well...I just didn't want to admit that at first.
Has anyone worn the damn thing out yet from clicking I wonder?

Would that be the case only if you're pushing it towards the next or previous gear? What about having it fourth gear...and you have your hand on it. You're not really pullng it towards the center, but towards the shift gate. Am I making any sense:confused: ? What you are saying makes complete sense, but I never really thought about too seriously.
Anyone ever pull oup the hand brake just a couple clicks so the light comes on and freak out your passengers?

are you guys kidding... i cant take ramps without both hands on the steering wheel and all my organs on the left side of my body.
I'm also trying to get into the habit of keeping my hands on the wheel the whole time and only take them off to ****. Cause that IS proper driving.

I got your back on this one, but the question, will resting my hand on the shift knob during drive, it wouldn't hurt persay, if you didn't pull your hand in any direction..., just don't move your hand. And if you do, put your hand on the e-brake, and don't pull up. My $0.02.
